There were a lot of Japanese players saying this game is underwhelming compared to the previous three. I am enjoying it so far.

It's very melodramatic compared to the humor of the first three. I like the new options, especially the use of 3D and the touch screen (gimmicky but clever), but the new main character is really bland, and a lot of things don't make much sense storywise, all things considered.

There's a GAF(yes, GAF!) post that makes a good point: The game is actually more about Phoenix Wright and what happened to him than it initially lets on. It's just told from Apollo's POV. That fits in with the complaints from Japanese players that Apollo doesn't have much of a presence compared to the other characters.

Yeah, and I fucking hated how Phoenix Wright was acting all mysterious and shit during the first case, basically acting completely out of character so the mystery of what happened to him isn't spoiled in the very first ten minutes of the game.

The higher-res (yes it is noticable) grafix are nice.

Yeah, that's REALLY stupid. "Look really carefully at this picture so you can see some tiny, almost unnoticeable habit, and if you can't see it the first time, watch again and again and again." At least the psyche locks in parts 2 and 3 had some sort of logic to it - you were actually solving puzzles you'd gathered clues to - looking at sprites for small animation changes is just distinguished mentally-challenged.

I'm on case 3 now and the game is still completely MEH. They even removed the feature for presenting profiles. Worst Ace Attorney game ever.

Also, notice how some of the animations are higher res but then they recycled a bunch from the previous games and didn't spruce them up at all. :/

I quite like the music, Im listening through my nice headphones and Im digging the tunes so far, but yeah not as catchy or powerful as the 1st 3 games

And the higher res pictures are much nicer to look at. The humor is still good

Also, the "habits" thing isn't so bad, they basically tell you "OK THIS IS THE PART WHERE YOU DO IT" - otherwise the thing is greyed out and you just do normal examination

They took out the Psyche-Locks, and profile presenting... this game is really neutered.

The PW series is like an anime/manga series. Presented like that its fine. 30 dollars is about the price of a DVD and you get about 4 episodes a DVD. The PW series is definitely for fans, I can understanding sneering, but expecting innovation from a popular franchise from capcom is kinda silly.

I got to the 4th case of the first game (the new case in it that wasn't in the original Jappy release of PW), but I didn't finish it because it was fuck boring. I am guessing I will not be missing anything important continuity-wise by just skipping to the second game and going from there?

The second game is worse than the first as well

Yeah, it's like Ace Attorney for dummies, they took out some of the most interesting parts and replaced them with something really boring ("look closely at an animated gif for weird movements").

So far, for me:

1 > 3 > 2 > 4

2 introduced Pearls and psyche locks, so I gotta give it mad props for that, yo.

I dunno, the complete lack of backstory for Apollo really irks me. Yeah, Phoenix Wright's backstory was super-cheesy, but at least the motivation made you understand the character's thirst for justice.

I think one reason I love Apollo Justice so much is that Mia never shows her ugly face. Which was a godsend

Apollo basically puts his mentor in prison, probably to be executed, for murder. Imagine this happening between Mia and Phoenix in the first game - it would have been major. And yet, here I am in case 3 and there really haven't been any consequences to it at all. Sure, I expect it to be tied together in case 4 (they were pretty obvious about it), but the fact that Apollo seems to feel no remorse about putting away his mentor, or that the prosecutor doesn't have any hate or resenment towards the attorney who put his older brother on death row, is distinguished mentally-challenged.

Plus, as mentors go, shouldn't Kristoph Gavin have taught Apollo Justice about law/morality? One of the things that was always stressed in the original games was what a good mentor Mia was, and how much Phoenix learned from her (a lawyer never stops smiling, straight to the end/a lawyer always believes in his clients/all that nice philosophy). One would expect that a lawyer who was mentored by a murderer like Kristoph would learn some very twisted defense tactics....yet Apollo is just as naive and optimistic as Phoenix was in the first few games.

Im really enjoying this game quite a lot, the jokes are coming really thick and fast, much more comedy than 2&3 (although I was playing the jap versions with english option) The pictures are really good look at, OMFG at Klavier's Air Guitar animation
