I'm a MAJOR jazz fan - always good to see young folk cast aside their pitchfork playlists for a while and revel in the other 99% of awesome recorded music :)

There is no possible way of knowing what you might like straight off, but my faves are Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. All 3 have more good stuff available than I can easily list. What have you heard so far?

I haven't heard anything really. I'm mostly interested from a guitar point of view and would like to hear some good jazz guitar playing, but also get a feel for the general rhythms of jazz music.

for the rythm of jazz i would say you MUST check out art blakey and the jazz messengers.  the foremost group in the revolution of jazz that was hard bop.

if you want the guitar check out Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Melvin Sparks for bop

Check out Grant Green, Wayne Johnson for soul jazz (an off shoot of bop which incorporates gospel and hymnal elements)

for cool jazz guitar (a west coast white derivative)  Remo Palmer, Johnny Smith, Herb Ellis,

my favorite era is the hard bop / soul jazz era.  My favorite trumpeter is Lee Morgon, fav sax Dexter Gordon and my favorite tech nerd math jazz guy is brubeck.

If you need anything uploaded for samples, I can hook you up.

i love coltranes impulse stuff, but not really a fan of miles davis once he started doing fusion stuff.  on the corner is great though.  my favorite davis is Sketches of Spain.  Absolutely amazing.  My second would have to be Birth of the Cool

It's jazz "fusion" if you will on the electric fucking violin - and I'm sure I've lost everyone with that description - but at least give "Nostalgia" a try.

Yup, I love Mingus, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock... some acid jazz/trip-hop crossover stuff is really good too but I don't know much at all about that stuff.

epic bump

Been on a jazz kick lately. Thinking about replacing my broken record player and stocking up on some shit.

Kamasi Washington - 'Re Run Home'
Quote
The Epic is a 172-minute, three-volume set that includes a 32-piece orchestra, a 20-person choir, and 17 songs overlaid with a compositional score written by Washington. Pulsing underneath is an otherworldly ten-piece band, each member of which is individually regarded as among the best young musicians on the planet – including bassist Thundercat and his brother, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr., bassist (yes, there are two) Miles Mosley, drummer Tony Austin (of course there are two), keyboard player Brandon Coleman, pianist Cameron Graves, and trombonist Ryan Porter. Patrice Quinn’s ethereal vocals round out the ensemble.

One of Flying Lotus' associates. Really loving this track and looking forward to the album.

lol. I thought this was a current thread and was about to post shit and then realized its from 2008.

Oh well. I'm always open to new jazz. I'm really only familiar with the classic old stuff and not much from the last couple of decades.

Same. This is Bodybuilding forum levels of bumpage. Also, I keep reading "jizz" instead of "jazz".

Uhh I am genuinely sorry that I have nothing else to contribute. Can't say I'm into jazz beyond the typical Coltrane and Miles Davis shit, but sometimes on my early-afternoon alcoholic days I pop on the jazz station and bliss out.
