Motorstorm 2 is due out in time for Christmas and moves the action away from the desert locale of the original. Gamers will be able to race around a lush island environment, full of interactive vegetation. The game will feature four-player split-screen action

I really liked the gameplay of the original but I wouldn't spend $60 for the content. Island locale and split screen, I imagine some more meat added all around? :bow

4 player split screen :o

I loved playing mario kart 64 and f-zero x and gx over local multiplayer.  Nice to see this throwback feature.

It's an option, MAF.  You don't need to use it.  You can play online multiplayer if you don't want split your screen.   But I'd rather have the option than not.

The first game didn't even have 2 player splitscreen. I won't be using 4p but 2p is nice.

btw what is a "linear racing game"? Is Burnout Paradise now the new standard instead of a heap of shit?

In my opinion, a linear racing game is a game without too many racing options. In motorstom, there was basically nothing to do becides race with cars that more or less felt the same. on basically the same track.

The racing however was great, one of the few racers I could actually get into and beat my racing pro friends but it seemed like the game was more like a demo you'd use to market your engine.

Yea, MS1 sucks. But take that same gameplay and put it into a more complete package and :bow

You guys are seriously underestimg what Killzone 2 will bring to the table.
The game was shown in a pre-alpha state last E3 and it's still the best looking console game anyone know of. Sony are putting work forces around the world onto that project.
KZ2 is a massive, massive undertaking. Probably unlike anything seen so far in gaming. When that game resurfaces, jaws will drop, hair will come off, skin will pale.
Guerrilla will be howling at the moon with an enormous erection showing.

So instead of linear desert racing game we get linear jungle racing game? Oh Goody.
Wait, what?  Linear?

All racing games are linear, in a sense, but Motorstorm was one of the few out there to offer a truly wide racing area with a multitude of potential paths available to the player.  These paths were not set in stone either as you could move from one to another throughout much of the race.  It was a very open racer.  I can't think of anything else quite like that, really.  Even stuff like Burnout Paradise, with its open world, ends up feeling somewhat more restricted when actually racing.  The courses in Motorstorm were extremely cool.  Bringing such open environments to an island sounds awesome.

DiRT isn't a bad game, but I never found it to be anywhere NEAR as fun as Motorstorm.  I even own the superior PC version (highest quality visuals + 60 fps).  Motorstorm has a terrible UI and lots of design issues outside of the race, unlike DiRT, but the core racing mechanic in Motorstorm was just so much more fun.

Pure looks quite lovely, but again, it seems rather different from Motorstorm.  It looks like a massive graphical overhaul of Rainbow's ATV Offroad Fury games (which were basically Motocross Madness games with ATVs).

Motorstorm was all about racing the same type of environment, open track or not in pretty much the same car every round. Without any real vehicle customization or sweet ass cars to unlock, the game became stale as fuck.
Yes, that was its problem...but the core gameplay was rock solid.

There were a limited number of tracks, but each one was extremely different from any of the others (gameplay wise).

You didn't use the same car every round, though.  They constantly switched it up and there was a pretty big difference between racing an ATV, a racing truck, and a semi.  Customization doesn't matter in an arcade game, if you ask me.

All I'm saying is that they presented the content very poorly, but the core of the game was very good.

I actually think of DiRT as the opposite.  The menu is fantastic, the amount of stuff in the game is great, and they offers lots of customization (which would not fit in Motorstorm)...but the core of the game was pretty boring (I thought).  DiRT only cost me $8 on the PC, though (Circuit City sale), so I didn't feel cheated.  When Motorstorm was firing on all cylinders, it was one of the most intense racing experiences I've ever had.  It simply didn't have the content to last.

For me, sitting a few feet from my 50" plasma using the first person view with the SIXAXIS motion control felt really incredible.  I know people weren't down with the motion controls, but holding it like a wheel and using the first person perspective could feel really cool.  It had issues at times (hood crumpling in your face), but there was so much potential there.

That's why I think the sequel could be truly outstanding.

Motorstrom was like a straight port of an arcade game which wouldn't have been acceptable even during last gen.  Look at the huge drops in popularity of Outrun or Sega Rally.

It did have pretty nice graphics and gameplay that was pretty fun at times.  The sequel needs to have a better balance of realistic physics and arcadey gameplay.  It's not fun to keep driving off a cliff or lose right at the end by being squashed by a bigger vehicle.

I thought the AI was a mixed bag.  It was flawed in its overall function (the last lap thing was especially bad), but at the same time, the AI did a good job of making the game feel exciting.  That is, the AI was always right there with you battling it out and the physical conflicts were pretty fun.

The whole game has problems when viewed on a large scale, but the minute to minute gameplay was extremely awesome.  I really hope the potential is found in the sequel.

yeah but Excitetruck took the piss out of itself, had innovative and fun controls, and didnt have a metric ton of fanboys gushing about how it was going to be the biggest 'killer-app' ever and was going to trounce the 360 and be 'really, really fun'. So many sfags couldnt believe how 'fun' Motorstorm was going to be. Look how fun it turned out hahaha

I'm surprised to hear that.

The game has flaws, but most people have found it to be a good time.  Did you try using motion controls in first person?  It actually works really well.

The handling and physics are extremely good, though, I don't see how you can say "sub-PS1" on that.  That's just flat out wrong (as in, not subjective).

I never could get into Excite Truck.  It certainly had more content than Motorstorm, but the core gameplay wasn't all that exciting to me.  It felt like an "extreme" version of Monster Truck Madness 2 or something (which I believe also offered motion control back in the day).  I much prefer the actual racing in Motorstorm, but of course, we all know it has plenty of other problems.

Neither game was really a great package in the end.

Excite truck had a much better implementation of motion control.  I have no idea how Dark1x ever learned to play Motorstorm with the motion controls.  They are trash just like sixaxis motion controls in every other PS3 game, imo.

In first person view, I had no problems with it.  I held it like a wheel and it worked well (but not with bikes and ATVs).  Basically, the 3rd person view didn't work well with motion controls, but in first person, it was fantastic.  I would pull a seat right up in front of my 50" plasma while using these controls and it felt as if I was playing a high-end arcade game.  I suppose that's part of its problem, though.  It's basically an arcade game and has the features of one.

Excite Truck does control a bit better (more responsive), but it's cars also fail to take physics into account and are designed around the idea that you are using a controller.  I'm not sure why this game didn't appeal to me.  The gameplay wasn't bad or anything, but something felt "off" about the whole thing.  It felt like a bargin bin PC game or something and I absolutely abhored its aesthetics.  It did offer custom soundtracks, though, which helped save me from the god awful music.

I've never had issues with motion controls on either system, though.  I used to have sensor bar issues with the Wii, but I did manage to solve that.  I like motion controls in some instances and dislike it in others, but that doesn't mean I've ever had issues adapting to it.

Really?  I felt exactly the opposite.  I found that the physics made terrain navigation far more engaging.  I suppose that demonstrates just how different the two games are, however, and it's easy to understand why someone would prefer one to the other.

I typically dislike the type of physics you find in rally games, however, as they feel too floaty (Rallisport and DiRT come to mind).  Motorstorm really gave me the feeling that the vehicles truly had weight and I loved it.

That's not to say I want realistic physics in all racing games.  I simply believe it suits off road titles.  I mean, Ridge Racer with realistic physics would suck.

I'm surprised at just how poorly regarded Motorstorm is.  I was under the impression that most folks enjoyed the game, but found it to be lacking in features.  All of this hate is really not what I expected.  Shows what I know.

I maintain that Motorstorm was an awesome proof of concept (in that the core gameplay really clicked with me), but was a poor package.  That is why I have such great hopes for a sequel.

Excite Truck is certainly more full featured, no doubt, but it too felt pretty barebones.  Unlike Motorstorm, however, it had this cheap "$10 budget" title vibe that I couldn't shake.  It didnt' feel like something Nintendo would have published.  Motorstorm felt unfinished, Excite Truck felt cheap.

It's all about keeping your turbo up without overheating, that means going from jump to jump getting the auto-boost for staying level. It's fun.

Even multi is fun because it's about getting stars, not necessarily coming in first.

I didn't really like either Rallisport game, to be honest.  Everyone claimed them to be the next Sega Rally, but they were nowhere near as fun.  I hated the handling.

Of course, it's as different from Motorstorm as Excite Truck is, so comparisons don't make a lot of sense.
