Local Number Portability was invented by Franz Kafka
« on: February 26, 2008, 06:34:48 PM »
Local Number Portability means moving your telephone number from one carrier to another. The FCC passed laws requiring carriers to let you "port out" your number to a new carrier. Hooray! Customers win!

My contract expires on March 4th, and I'm looking to move from AT&T to Helio.

However, after five calls this morning (three to AT&T, two Helio), I have determined:

1) If I cancel my AT&T contract early, I incur a $175 Early Termination Fee (ETF).
2) If I request that AT&T port my number to Helio, I incur the $175 ETF.
3) AT&T will not let me "buy out" the remainder of my contract (which is much less than $175).
4) If I wait until my AT&T contract expires, the number is immediately released and I can't port it out. It just vanishes into the aether.

So either I port my number out "early" and pay the ETF, or I let my contract expire and I lose the number. There's no way to

A) move from one carrier to another
B) without service interruption
C) while keeping your current number.

No wonder the telecoms all agreed to this legislation!

wait for the contract to end w/ at&t, then port the number over

legally they cannot hold it if you're in good standing (ie out of contract, not indebted).  it won't be released to the ether. it will only be released to the ether if you cancel your at&t account before you successfully port the number to your new carrier

don't I have to recontract with AT&T as soon as my 2-years are up?

you'll go month to month until you re-up.

as soon as you go month to month (your online bill should tell you when that is) you should talk to your new desired provider and inform them you want to open an account with them and port the number.

month to month??? weird

American cellphone companies are so weird, though the success of the iPhone is forcing people to, like, develop handsets with features and stuff

I'm tempted to dual phone it and get a new number; that way, I can take advantage of Helio's 30-day guarantee if coverage ends up sucking, I hate the form factor, etc.

make certain you talk to them about the 30 day because a lot of time that can be full of hidden holes.

when i worked for alltel (a small southern cell phone company) we rolled out a 30 day guarantee but it was so filled with loopholes that it may as well not have been there at all.
