a response to lyte edge saying this generation of games sucks:

basically what you are watching is the result of vulturous, corporate businessmen that are in this to make money, and as a result are screwing up things with thier uncalculated, short-sighted decisions.  there are not enough gamers in the creative portion of the industry, which is why so much sucks and so much is clearly designed to make money to keep the company afloat.  unfortunately most gamers are not adjusted to fit within society, let alone a business, and therefore screw themselves out of being able to contribute.  i mean really, who wants to hear a ranting fanboy at work, or someone being completely unreasonable about wanting some game that no one cares about (*cough* samurai showdown series *cough*)?

the whole thing is going to shit like the movie industry.

does anyone remember what saved movies?

that would be indie films.  those are still the best movies with the best stories and cinematography.  though some of the indie sector has started to go mainstream - a point that is both paradoxical and drawn out and i don't want to get into now - indie films have survived a great deal of bullshit and the test of time and make it difficult to say, "all movies suck."

do you think the same would happen with games?  small designers that make outstanding games from out of nowhere, beating out the final fantasys and MGSs of the industry?

what do you guys think?

Uhm, I think maybe this should have been kept on the forum it was originally posted on, since no one has any idea of what you're talking about!   :-[  I said elsewhere, in response to LEGUNA saying the PS3 was the best system out:

Quote
I can't call the PS3 the better system when it doesn't have shit to play and online services that aren't as good as the 360.

This gen sucks shit, that is the real answer. Most of my favorite games have been ports/port-ups or PS2 releases. It's sad. For me it's been Mass Effect, Halo 3, Bioshock, Crackdown, and VF5 that have sucked me in. It's hard to really think of much else that I'd count as "next-gen."

I can name shitloads more PS2 (and even Wii- hey, it's "last gen." :P) games though.

But I guess that's really just the consoles, cuz the portables rock. What I am loving right now? PSP and DS games. My next "big" game? Musou Orochi 2. On PLAYSTATION 2. Even the developers are going "back."

To which you replied:

Hey, I know how it works.  I know that making a big-budget game that fits into the "guaranteed sales" strategy is what they're going to for.  It makes sense to make big-guts-filled-bald-space-marine-shooter over something more creative.

Haha, that's you, not me.  I am applauding SNK's decision to go forward and make a new 3D SS game, incidentially.

I suppose you can think of the countless free PC and some of the XBLA/PSN titles as being the equivalent of indie movies.  I don't know if they can be compared in the same way though.

I do think that things are going to get better this generation (they already have), but it's the first wave of consoles that just hasn't gotten me anywhere near as excited as the previous ones.

Thanks for the context.

While I think this gen lacks in the volume department, I feel like the best games I'm playing now are at least as good a the best games I'd played at this point of last gen. I'm pretty damn satisfied. And I'm not even talking about downloadables.

I'm certainly finishing current-gen games at a much higher rate than last gen ones.

My 22-inch SDTV isn't the only reason I haven't upgraded to next gen.  There's really nothing that makes me go OMG I MUST UPGRADE.

That's what I said too... then I got a sexy new TV. Going back is just eye-scratching, especially when I try to play the Wii

Well, I do have to say that seeing and playing these games on HDTVs can change your mind.  This is what happened to Muckson, actually.  When I got my HDTV back at the end of 2006, he came over to see it and was floored by Oblivion.  He ended up buying a 360 and a PC monitor (cheaper alternative!) to tide him over until he went back to the States and bought a larger HDTV.

For me, the best thing about this generation of consoles has been online services, Xbox Live in particular.  It's the community and features that make it what it is.  Plus there's tons of games coming out with online games; it's no longer just FPS and sports games that are online like the last gen.

That's what I said too... then I got a sexy new TV. Going back is just eye-scratching, especially when I try to play the Wii

This is why I want to go back...I want to get an SDTV just to use with the Wii.

This too.  IMO Japanese developers haven't quite gotten the hang of things like the western developers have.

don't get me wrong, i still love japanese games the most (mistwalker, capcom, team ninja..etc..) but if you are buying a next gen console and not planing to get western games for it, then forget it, this gen ain't for you.

Well...Wolfenstein 3D, Dark Forces and Doom I played on Mac, since that's the only computer we had in the early nineties.  Powerslave I played on PSX.

I'm not really interested in shooters, but the Bioshock hype got me interested.  It's kinda sad to see how the hype totally vanished once everyone beat it and suddenly the game changed from "totally awesome" to "flawed but above average."

I had 360 for a year before I got my first FPS for it. Not my genre. Variety is even better now.

The quality western games aren't really in the genres I like, apart from some indie games... that's why I've traditionally ignored them. There's exceptions, of course, but most of my games I buy end up being from Japan... Though the next game I want to buy is Wipeout Pulse, which will be maybe the 4th European game I own.

Bioshock was never going to live up to the hype, but alot of the backlash came from Nintendo fanatics terrified at the prospect that SMG (an average game if there ever was one) would trump it during awards season.

Bioshock was absolutely fantastic IMO, I'll definitely replay at at some point for some more achievements

buy a 360 already Ichi

This gen kinda sucks, and I own all three next gen systems. As McDragon already said, if your not a fan of shooters or western games this generation is definitely not for you. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of either. One game that I've really enjoyed so far was Super Mario Galaxy, which incidentally was better than any game I've played the last gen. I also loved VF5, which I claim to be the best 3D fighter I have ever played. It's fucking unbelievable, and the reason I purchased my PS3. Crackdown was also a shitload of fun. Definitely the best sandbox game currently out there.

I guess what this generation lacks in quantity it makes up in quality, but the last generation delivered both.
