so i just got done reading this article at next-gen.biz:

"Is Xbox 360 Past Its Peak?"

the guy basically says that the 360 is losing steam and will probably not be the dominant force that microsoft wants it to be within the gaming industry. he downplays the awesome software sales by emphasizing hardware numbers and lack of mass market appeal as being most noteworthy. he also talks a lot about hardware failures and mentions that the current 360 portfolio is not the formula for success -- and how the 360 is not capitalizing on casuals.

so this got me thinking. since 2008 and beyond apparently does not belong to the 360, does it really matter for MS if the 360 isn't as dominant on a worldwide scale? in my opinion, the 360 ecosystem is pretty healthy and even without a huge casual fanbase, it could probably do fine the way its rabid userbase laps up games like a fattie at a 2-for-1 big mac sale. there's still tons of money to be had and new channels to increase revenue in an ever expanding market. it doesn't seem likely that the 360 would be a failure, even if it wasn't pulling PS2 style dominance. is there even a clear-cut way to gauge success this generation?

so much meh-face $:-\$ for the 360 these days, really wtf.

this "2008 year of the PS3" campaign is starting to contaminate everyone's soup.

360 is doing pretty fine for itself as is... I don't really know much about how it's performing in Europe, but the ship has already sailed on 360 (or anything for that matter) topping Wii for best selling system this gen.

What I find most interesting is the fact that MS chose to continue in the video game business, after they lost $4-$5 billlion on the Xbox. They'd have to dominate this gen. significantly more than even Sony did with the PS2 for them to make back all that money.

I could be wrong. I remember seeing that Sony had lost more on PS3 than they gained on PS2, and thinking that PS3's losses weren't so far off from XBox1.

it's probably 7.1pcm if it is really filling 50gig + duplicated data for faster load times.

most of the cutscenes are realtime iirc.

well, mgs games have always intercut a certain amount of film footage with the cutscenes. maybe they've gone crazy with that stuff. i HOPE they haven't prerecorded the in-engine cutscenes, as nd did with uncharted

or yeah, maybe it's a ton of uncompressed audio

You're sure that not all MGS cutscenes are real time? I remember being able to manipulate the camera for all the MGS games on the PS2.

I really hope that Kojima hasn't decided to put a bunch of videos or dialogue in MGS4. A bunch of sequences where you just sit around and listen to bullshit, like MGS2, would really be a terrible way to conclude the series.

It's like mathematically impossible for them to do so with just a PS3 release.

They are a lot better off than they were before, but I think the RROD legacy will really lower first year sales of their next console.

Konami deserves their fail. Kojima is the death of that company. They banked on an overrated hack when Bemani were the real envisioners of the future.

i haven't been following the podcasts and stuff, but the idea that mgs4 is on a bd50 turns out to have been invented by gaf sfags -- kojipro have just said that they ran out of space. i've read rumors that bd50 yields still aren't great, and mgs4 will of course have a much bigger print run than any bd movie to date. it's probably on a bd25.

I know that when Guitar Hero became a runaway hit, instead of going, "hey, we have a lot of experience in this space, how can we come in next year and clean the fuck up?" they went "what patents do we have that we can use to litigate?" Then, they found out they didn't have any. Then, Guitar Hero and Rock Band took over the fucking world. And Konami was left holding their dick in their hands. And their dick only had three buttons.

This is from a company with working guitar/bass/drum sessions since 2000, and licensed tracks since 2001.
