Official Final Fantasy XII discussion
« on: November 01, 2006, 12:29:03 PM »
Since it's tradition for me to get each new FF release, yesterday had me twitching back and forth. I was going to save for Wii but...it's FF! I money left over for my Wii + Zelda fund, but whatever. FF! The thing is, around the release for this thing, I wasn't particularly excited for it. I mean, I wanted it because it's FF, but in terms of "Oh man I need to play this now!" scale, it was probably 4/10, which is shocking considering it's FF!

I'm enjoying myself, but I'm definitely not having as much fun as I had when I played FFIV, VI - X for the first time. Still, it's definitely a good game. I think the over exposure of FF has nulled my excitement and love for the series, but whatever. It's FF!

+ The political/war story is traditional Matsuno at work here. Any fan of this man's work will instantly feel right at home: acroynms for almost every thing with a deep, twisted political / war plot leading the way. I just want to say that with this FF, as pre-release hype was hoping for, our baby has finally grown up.

+ In terms of presentation, I have not been this impressed with a Final Fantasy since my first one, FFVII. It truly feels like Final Fantasy recreated. From the narrator's voice with the history book looming in the background, to the size and scope of the capital Rabanastre, this is what I was hoping for a next generation Final Fantasy 5 years ago (damn!). Square Enix has brought Ivalice to life like no other world they've worked on before. I am really, really, impressed with the presentation.

+ While the music is generic, and Sakimoto can do way better, the music fits the mood extremely well.

+ The atmosphere, has been expertly crafted to a tee. Citizens buying goods in shops and buying their groceries; orphan children lying in dirty pavement; Rabanatrans chatting and mingling and doing just practically everday things. It's a joy, really, to experience mmorpg level scope in a console game. Hell, a Japanese rpg no less. If there's one negative thing I can say about the size of Rabanastre so far, it's that it's actually too big, which is shocking coming from me (I have a large city/town/world fetish when it comes to games like this). Actually, it's not the size per se, it's the fact that there doesn't seem to be that many important locations in the area, making a lot of the traveling through the city feel like dead time until you reach your next destination.

+ The battle system, as was presented in the demo, atleast so far, is pretty fun. The game is actually moderate in difficulty already. I found a T-rex out in the desert and it killed me in one hit!

+ The cutscene direction, and voice acting in general, are absolutely amazing. In fact, the entire localization for Final Fantasy XII should be praised as a new high standard when it comes to this stuff. The time and effort that went into making the dialouge full of so much life, is to be truly admired. Ofcourse, since this is Smith, the translator/localizer for Vagrant Story, Phoenix Wright;etc. this is to be expected. That guy is truly a talent.

- While the difficulty is already moderate, the need to grind is necessity as well. Items costs way too much. 70 Gil for potions? wtf maybe I'm off rocker but I swear that should cost..10-20 gill a piece? Bah. Gill is extremely hard to come by in FFXII, and in order to get some cash you're going to have to sell some loot, which is found by murdering animals in the area.

- The fetch quests. Okay, setting up the story is fine and all, but I don't really want to find this gem in order to get into a certain place that will not be mentioned for fear of spoilers.

- As was said before, the city can seem like it's TOO big. Wow, this city is so huge I'm sure it'd take atleast 2-3 more hours just to get used to it.

I prefer playing the game solo than with a party member. Wow, it's a drastic difference and playing solo with active mode is hectic sometimes. I don't get the complaints about the "game plays itself" just yet and I found the little that I experienced with the Gambit system so far to be really useful and it breaks down the tedium in a lot of ways.

What's funny is that I'm usually against grinding but grinding in FFXII is surprisingly fun. The battles are fast, and playing solo is so fucking fun. Exploring the enviroments and trying to fight every monster you see is half the fun. The werewolves killed me in one hit though!

The license board, while a good idea, is already starting to get annoying however. I really hate having to have a license to bear certain shields, swords;etc. I was hoping this would work via type, not the weapon/armor specifically. I had a Eschelon (or whatever) shield in my inventory for a long while and then I finally got the license. =/ It reminds me of DDS2 in that you can you completely customize your characters, and strategy in using the board is required, but I'm liking DDS2's take a lot more.

And wow, this game is hard already! I haven't had this much trouble at the beginning of an FF since the early ones. I've died about 5 times already. Those dino's with the big feet catch me off guard sometimes. Their stomp move will rape you, that is a given.

Seriously tho, im starting to think FF fans just want FMV with a LITTLE bit of gameplay. Almost every review I read has guarded misgivings about the GAMEPLAY of the game, but theyre just FLOORED OMG by the production values..which is fine, but its clear at this point when Production values can propell a game above a 8.5 that something is wrong with the way people look at the series :p/

I haven't bought it yet.  I got my new PS2 and everything, I had it preordered but when the time came to go pick it up, I said "meh" and played some Half Life 2.  What the hell is wrong with me?  I was super excited a few months ago too.

Im just worried that Final Fantasy will never again get a fair review ya know?

Im not saying its crap, im just saying that FF reviews are always with kid gloves. Everything is always groundbreaking, magnificent, jaw dropping, stunning, blah blah blah, when to be honest I thought VP2's visuals were more impressive and the game had a better soundtrack. Story was awesome, and played straight, FF isnt the only series to do that..

VP2 deserved a B+/A-, and I can totally see why people might not like it, but it feels like it REALLY got a B+ all around because the A-/A was already reserved for FF12 :(

the press has some sort of stigma about giving monolithic series like FF low scores. Hell look at halo 2, it got 9s all around, and it doesn't deserve that.

FFXII is more gameplay than story champ. I've played 5 hours and most of that was gameplay. Maybe 30 minutes was story.

Okay, I'm enjoying this game. Dungeon crawling. Check! The sheer satisfication of getting an awesome cutscene after a long ass dungeon is always good!

One thing I like about this game so far is gameplay : story ratio. The gameplay requires a lot of work but when you get a story sequence it acts like a reward, not unlike many other dungeon crawlers or games of this type. That sewer dungeon gave me a DDS feel for some reason.

I was liking the battle system...until Gambits were completely introduced in that sewer dungeon (Hahaha I'm surprised they did a cliche' like that so early in the game).

From there, it was me adjusting to the Gambit system. I'm pretty put off by the whole thing. Using Potions on all allies < 70 % HP results in mass usage of my dear Potions. Using Cure isn't fast enough, First Aid I haven't tried yet. Before the sewers I didn't understand why people say,"The game plays itself." but now I do. The fire horse boss battle was terrible. It was basically me just standing there sniping the boss far away with arrows (Fran <3). I didn't really do a thing. Perhaps it's because I'm way early in the game or because my Gambit set up was really good (which wasn't that hard to accomplish in the first place..it seemed like a pretty basic set up). I'm thinking of taking off Cure < 70% HP altogether. The first time I fought the boss, I couldn't beat it because it was way too hard micromanaging every single character during the fight without gambits. It's just too damn hectic on active mode, atleast. It seems that Gambits are the way to go but..I don't want to use Gambits.

As of now the Gambit system and License Board are my only problems. I think I just need to experiement, but I doubt it.

Oh, and Balthier's voice sucks. I was expecting a dashing rogue, not a fat, noble Englishman voice. It's a good thing Fran balances it all out.

Really, you don't like Balthier's voice?

I like the gambit system a lot from what I've played.  I hate micromanaging stupid battles (just about every battle outside of boss battles) and am happy for an automated system that allows me to just focus on the dungeon.  It's annoyingly limited at this stage of the game but I know that won't be the case for too long.  The only area I'm a little worried about is boss fights.  If they don't require a fair amount of micro-managing (or at least changing gambits mid battle to adapt to what's going on) I'm not going to be happy.

edit: I agree that the license board really sucks.  I managed to guess where the shield license was on the first try but I'm not looking forward to doing that on a regular basis.

Yeah the license board is a good idea but goddamn man. Why the fuck should I grind for Gill AND LP? GOD. It's the most annoying thing ever. I have a license but I don't have the weapon; I got the weapon but I don't have the license. It is STUPID.

As for guessing, you don't really have to. When you're on the LB you'll see that the type of license is dispalyed on there. So like, for shields, it'll say: Heavy Shileds, Light Shields, then you'll have your swords and daggers, maces, and axes, lances;etc. adjacent to the shields, and then armor right across from there. Just look around the board and you'll get it.

I don't like Balthier's voice because I'm just so used to the Japanese one I guess. I really like his Japanese voice. If he talked in English like that it'd be awesome. But no..we get a damn..noble Englishman. Ugh!

By guessing I mean I couldn't see any tiles for shields on the board when I picked one up in the area where you get the sunstone.  I guessed and chose the bronze armor tile (I think) which opened up a couple more titles.  One of those allowed me to equip the shield.  I'm hoping I don't have to reload often because of things like this.

My thoughts on FFXII after very limited initial play experience:

PROS:

+Voice work is top notch
+Art is top notch
+CG is top notch
+Music is good

Cons:

+Spaceships being beat up with swords.
+License system is neeedless blooooat
+Combat system is horrid, friendly AI can actually push each other around out of attack ranges.
+The lines are useless really, and so is the garish OMG ITEM ICON that pops up when an item is dropped
+The first hour wasn't much gameplay except stuff that pissed me the fuck off.

I mean really even story wise im not convinced yet. Why am I using swords and arrows if there are spaceships and forcefields. Why do swords and arrows work? It just seems like so much in FFXII is there to make my experience LONGER not better.

Are you guys playing on wait or active mode?

Actually, I found the lines useful to some degree when I was grinding mobs. Some guys came out of nowhere and other wise would have raped me because they were way higher in level. I wouldn't have noticed them until it was too late if I didn't see that red line over my head.

A graphics option that doesn't seem to work that well.

I checked Gamefaqs:

Quote
Finally, Config allows you to adjust the game settings. The first option
allows you to choose between Wait (time doesn't pass while the menu is
open) and Active (time passes anyway if the menu is open) modes. The
second option adjusts the speed of battle. The third option is whether
to show the target lines (on and off), and the fourth is whether to
remember the cursor position everytime you open the menu (remember and
forget).

Looks like you can't, MAF.

The flicker filter makes a difference for me, im pumping it through an LCD monitor tho. With the filter off it looks far more 'raw' I guess is the term, but you can notice a slight flicker. The filter adds a slight blur to everything so while the flickering is still going on, its impossible to see with the blur. I sorta like it tho cause I think the filter takes care of some shimmering inherent in all PS2 games lol

Yeah, in general PS2 games are better on older tvs. Clarity is not a friend to the ps2 :(. Even VP2 which in my opinion, because of the way the world was focused, looks better than FFXII, has shimmering issues. Not so much with the jaggies tho which is impressive.

Ivalice is impressive, its just the city is so big the geometry seems to suffer a bit with some of the buildings n such I THINK, but ive made it clear to friends and close relations that im a big ol VP2 fanboy
