eee pc: do want.
« on: March 02, 2008, 02:08:42 AM »
http://eeepc.asus.com/us/product.htm

One of the more annoying aspects of playing with SLRs is how much crap you have to lug around.  If you are just meandering about taking pictures, you need at lest 3 lenses with you, arguably 4 (long telephoto, wide angle, an adequate portrait lens, and 50mm fixed, and I guess a macro lens if you are into that).  Lenses can be heavy.  And my camera's body weighs about 4 pounds.  So basically, going out well-equipped means going out with a bit less than 20 pounds of crap

But I was thinking about starting processing on the road, or taking a break from pictures in order to process things before I return home.  In order to do this, I would of course need a laptop.  My ultraportable M1330 is just about 4 pounds, but that's a weight premium I don't want to have to deal with. Enter the eee pc.

The eee pc weighs half as much, which makes it a nice choice for quick and dirty field editing.  The price is cheap, the storage is speedy SSD, and for a "field machine" I really do not need a machine that can hold more than one camera load's worth of pictures.

EEE!  PC!!!!  EEE!!!! PC!!!!!

I would save the cash, and use the M1330 - which itself is an excellent ultraportable. You're only talking about a 2 pound difference. Personally, I don't like managing media or files between three computers.

Go for it if you don't have anything better to buy with the extra cash.

I like its aesthetics but it seems to be made for kids with tiny hands, not for a 6'3 adult with big ol' meat hooks.

File management is no biggie.  MICROSOFT SMB makes transferring images between operating systems easy, since MS was nice enough to let Apple and Lunix STEAL it.

Is the difference between 4 pounds and 2 pounds really that crucial?  And won't photoprocessing murder the battery anyhow?

When I am bitching about 20 pounds of crap, 2 pounds is 10% of the weight.  Also, the smaller physical area of the eee pc is a factor, too.  It's something not as big slung across my shoulder.

I'd assume I could get 2 hours of battery life, total, which would be enough for a day.  I'd reserve real processing for home.  It would just be nice to be able to start early on sorting, renaming, and binning shit.

I am trying to cut pounds carried any way I can.  It's not like I'm a weakling, it's just that my camera bag is too annoying to lug around.

 I spend mine on books.

Today my spending was confined to an SLR and some rare-ish high speed infra red black and white 35mm film.

You could of course save 2lbs BY NOT CARRYING A PC AT ALL  :)

(i'm only annoyed because this thread has instilled a ferocious desire to buy one of those things even though i don't need one anymore than you do)

I travel by bus a lot, so fucking around on the laptop is usually a large part of any expedition in the city.
