TAXES DONE! BUTT: RAPED!
« on: March 05, 2008, 02:49:27 PM »
Haha just kidding. I got a good chunk back, but lost a big chunk thanks to the job I had before my current one. Much sadness but "At least I don't owe"

How would a previous job affect your current taxes?  I don't know much about filing taxes since I've never worked full time.  The most I made in a year was about 2-3k from research and tutoring.

Basically say I worked at a job where I didnt make a lot, so thanks to the numbers, and the fact that I want money, I take out only what the govt needs, and they dont need much because im in a low bracket.

Now imagine after 3-4 months of this, where I have a pretty good bit of income...say 8000+, I leave the job for a new one, which is in an entirely different bracket. So when taxes roll around, the income from the first job is lumped in, but relatively speaking the govt goes HAY U IN THIS BRACKET U NOT CHARGED ENUFF FOR MONTHS 1-4 and then I cry and they take from my refund. Thankfully, in my current job I have plenty taken out now that the need for money isnt as dire and im worried about fucking up major in this bracket.

You should get a better Tax consultant then.  A financial advisor at school talked to me once about how investing my money can lead to lower taxes.  I didn't really get what he was saying but I plan to talk to him again when I graduate.

Fo sho.

We do have a really high sales tax:

Quote from: Wikipedia
Washington has a 6.5% statewide sales tax. As of 31st October 2007, sales tax is not applied on most food items and prescription medications (not including over-the-counter medications). Individual counties, municipalities and regional transit authorities are entitled to collect a sales tax, which vary from 0.7% to 2.4%. In the City of Seattle, and neighboring municipalities in the same county, the King County Food & Beverage tax adds an additional .5% to food and beverages purchased in bars, taverns and restaurants resulting in an effective tax rate of 9.4% (8.9% on all other items).[58] Additionally, the sale or lease of motor vehicles for use on the road incur an additional 0.3% tax, rental of a car for less than 30 days has an additional state/local tax of 8.9%.[58] When renting a car for less than 30 days in Seattle, the total sales tax is 18.6%. When purchasing an automobile, if you trade in a car, the state subtracts the price of the trade when calculating the sales tax to be paid on the automobile. (e.g., purchasing a $40,000 car and trading a $20,000 car, you would be taxed on the difference of $20,000 only, not the full amount of the new vehicle.)

We also have the highest gas tax (34 cents/gallon) in the country.

Yes there are a few things I could do - but I dont have the time.

Some of the guys I work with own 10 or so houses for such purposes.

They are all miserable.

It's 8.9% here in Seattle/King County. I love going to down to Oregon and taking advantage of 0.0% sales tax.

What do you mean by taking out money?

What they deduct for taxes. You can have them take out more than they need. Returns are really just your money that they took that they didn't need. Its a forced savings account of sorts lol.

There is screaming bloody murder in my town over the fact they still charge .5 extra sales tax over a park that was built ten years ago.

I paid no tax last year, and I'll end up paying no income tax this year. My salary is that low!
