MTV News compares Death Cab's Narrow Stairs to OK Computer

Quote
In short, it's the album on which Death Cab make the leap, graduating from one of indie's premiere acts to one of the best bands in the country, a formidable and fearless outfit existing at the exact intersection of critical acclaim and commercial success. This kind of thing only happens when bands stop trying to be all things to all people, shut themselves off from the outside world, and simply play. If they're good enough — and clearly, Death Cab are — then greatness follows. It's what happened to Radiohead on OK Computer, or Beck on Odelay or even the White Stripes on Elephant. And now you can add Death Cab for Cutie to the conversation, and whether Narrow Stairs has the same cultural impact as any of those other albums remains to be seen — I'm not even sure any of their fans are gonna buy it — but suffice it to say, it deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.

Breaking News:  EB poster Raoul Duke compares MTV News to a remedial first grade shapes and colors class, and Death Cab for Cutie to the sound of good taste dying in a corner.

Death Cab is awesome, so you're wrong.

Besides, the guy who wrote the article wasn't a fan to begin with. So you might want to give it a chance. It's evidently completely different than any album they've ever done.

If you are talking about Plans, that definitely isn't their best. Transatlanticism is IMO.

WHERE'S DISTANTMANTRA WITH SOME DCFC LOVE?

Whenever I saw them live they didn't play that song. It was the only song they didn't play that I wanted to hear. Such a fucking great song.

They're not the band from my late high school and college years (1999-2003) anymore, but I still like them.

I'd hesitate to get so excited about the new album, though. That's a very outrageous claim to make.

I'll try to check them out at the show in Bremerton, 56 shows isn't enough!  ;)

I think what they are trying to say is that they have cultivated a sound all their own and are at the peak of whatever that "sound" may be.

OK Computer is probably the best album of the nineties.

(Image removed from quote.)

Pearl Jam is quite good. Of course, I fucking love Nirvana, so In Utero would probably chart higher on my list of best albums for the nineties. Still a very good album though.

As for Genghis Cohen, I really don't understand why a solo Ben Gibbard song not only made it onto a Death Cab CD, but became a single as well. There's tons of better songs on the album. I would have made What Sarah Said a single instead. It's so much more descriptive. I Will Follow You Into The Dark is basically just a simple love song with some commentary on dying thrown in there.

Seriously though, OK Computer is probably one of maybe two or three albums I can sit down to and listen to the entire way through without changing a track. The other one I can think of off of the top of my head would probably be Transatlanticism, by Death Cab, of course.

I won't lie.  I really quite enjoyed Transatlanticism, especially the title track.  Maybe this new album coming out will be as good as that album.

Yeah, Plans sucked.

I won't say it sucked, but a lot of the tracks on there weren't really even that original.

Still, the first two tracks and the entire rest of the album from Crooked Teeth onward is good.
