Warren Buffett is the richest man on the planet.

Riding the surging price of Berkshire Hathaway stock, America's most beloved investor has seen his fortune swell to an estimated $62 billion, up $10 billion from a year ago. That massive pile of scratch puts him ahead of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who was the richest man in the world for 13 straight years.

Gates is now worth $58 billion and is ranked third in the world. He is up $2 billion from a year ago, but would have been perhaps as rich — or richer — than Buffett had Microsoft not made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo! at the beginning of February.

Gates' fortune also swelled massively last fall. Shares of Microsoft jumped 30 percent between late October and early November to $37 a share, only to fall after the company announced its intentions to buy Yahoo! for $45 billion on Feb. 1.

Put some of it in a bank to collect interest, hire someone smart to invest some of it for me, and do a lot of philanthropy like Gates. I already make more money than I really need.

Yeah I'd give a lot away. Taking care of my family would be the first priority, but I could do that and way more with 60mil. 60bil is like wtf.

I'd also invest a good deal of it after giving to charities/ministries/etc. With 62bil I'd have POWER, which I would use somehow

62 billion can go like that, so its not really instant world changing power, but rather the power to change the world slowly over time

i'd give away the majority of the money (i wouldn't need it anyway), donate, take care of myself and the family. and invest some of it, and put the rest on an account

i'd never buy mansions/showy cars, though

(i'd totally buy more than one hdtv, though, omg)

I'd also fund a Harry Potter animated cartoon, with the same art as Samurai Jack. Each episode would be based on a chapter of the book, so each season would be long. omg that would be awesome

Plus I'd pay Sega to make Astal 2

I don't need a mansion but I'd buy a nice sized house. I'm not into cars but I'd probably get at least one cool car, like a Mercedes or a PT Cruiser.

I would also maybe take part in some mild philanthropic work, but it would have to be interesting. Like, say, I would go to Africa and purchase about 100k infants, and use them to de-land mine the middle east and eastern europe.
