Why all the hate for American Beauty?

I remember it being pretty well-agreed upon by quite a few people here that it was hugely overrated, but I just caught it on HBO and thought it was decent. I'm not a big fan of Spacey, either. The angsty WAAIMATEENAGER daughter and "I hate feggits" Marine-dad were both a bit cliche but it was at least enjoyable.

Well, I wasn't really paying attention when it came out so I suppose avoiding everyone creaming their pants over it helped.

I really hate that movie. It was just so pretentious and thought it was making some huge statement.

I remember everybody loved it when it first came out. At first, I was one of two people I knew who didn't like it. I'm glad when I realize that history has been kind to me and bestowed a terrible backlash upon this filth.

Another reason I hate it so much is that the movie cockblocked me. It is so bad that I couldn't silently put up with it for two hours in order to have sex with a weepy 'intellectual.' It was one of her favourites, so she was probably a bad lay anyway.

Everything except the second dinner scene was Shit on Ice Skates.

And the creepy stalker dude looks like Simon from Firefly.
