How on earth is the music overdone?  It barely has a soundtrack.

I am insulted by the soundtrack comments.  I talk with Wendy Carlos on a regular basis. The story is basically that Kubrick had the whole movie scored, but in the end he realized that horror movies worked better with sparser accompaniment.

You know, I won't be taking her soundtrack commentary to heart.

BTW, Will, what do you think of the framing?  That movie looks pretty nutso, especially the external shots.

I think it's a pretty great film.

I got lots of this from her earlier too:

"Who are those two girls?"

"Who is the old woman?"

"Why was she young when she came out of the tub?"

"Is Jack psychic because he can see the old woman?"

"Why did he tell his wife he saw nothing?"

I hate you and I didn't even say that last one.  Plus you overexaggerated the other ones.

My mother-in-law does this (asks questions throughout the movie). It's unbearable.

I have a friend who does it too. I can never understand why she asks me questions during a movie, the answers to which she will find out if she keeps watching  ???

Even worse, when you turn to something in the middle with one of those people.

"Why is so-and-so doing what-and-what?"

"I dunno, bitch, we both started watching at the same time!"

BTW, I didn't realize Wendy Carlos scored The Shining too.  I've only seen The Shining once but I remember certain 'sounds' as the soundtrack, it was eerie and effective I thought, although absolutely hauntingly silent in a lot of parts.  Great movie, I can't wait to watch it in HD, maybe this weekend.

Kentucky is populated with question watchers.

Question watchers are easily thwarted by the phrase "You'll see" or "Watch the movie and find out"

That's always what I say.  However, it rarely actually shuts them up

Yep, she does two pieces for the Shining.  Kubrick favorite and 20th century jesus Gyorgy Ligeti is also on it, and so is Ligeti favorite (and Transylvanian) Bela Bartok.

i saw a documentary about ligeti yesterday--well, a part of it. and they showed how kubrick really loved his music, and frequently used it in his movies. i haven't seen eyes wide shut in its entirety yet, but they showed a scene with cruise's character being followed by an old man in a raincoat. the scene takes place at night. you hear this really tense piece of piano music during the scene--do you know the title of that piece, tvc?

That is Musica Ricercata 2.  It's a series of 11 sparse piano pieces.

I like 3 or 4 or 8 best, but I love how 2 is used in EWS.
