My platformer fix, I must have it
« on: March 15, 2008, 03:57:14 PM »
So this summer I'm going to start working again and save up to get quite a few things, namely a new TV, possibly make the switch to Mac Mini after Windows has made it a daily habit to forcibly intrude my anal cavity, and last but not least, a portable system. Now, the handheld systems we've been dealing with for the past while I've gone through in droves. I think I've bought and sold more than my share of handheld systems, going through three NDSs and four PSPs. Now comes a time where I will devote my time to one handheld, and that is whichever one will provide me with the sweet platforming justice I crave so.

In EB's opinion, which system should I make as my final handheld purchase? I'm leaning towards the DS because of Mega Man ZX, Phoenix Wright, that new EA game, Lunar Knights, and many other things. When I had a PSP all I ever played was SFA3, pretty much.

To be honest, I played my DS much more than my PSP before I "hacked" it. Now thanks to custom firmware, my PSP is getting most of my handheld time because of emulators, roms, and running PSP games off of my 8 GB memory stick. If you're not going to install custom firmware on it, I wouldn't buy a PSP because most of the portable's game experiences are replicated better on any of the last generation's home consoles. I must also mention that the PSP is a fantastic portable media player if you're into that kind of thing.

Now with regard to platformers, I found that the DS's offerings were much better than the PSP's, especially if you like 2D platformers more than 3D ones.

Probably DS because of its 1st party titles.  There are hardly any platformers on the PSP.  Ratchet's supposed to be a platformer but it has much more emphasis on shooting than jumping around.

I know the series is not for everyone, but I really liked the Sonic Rush games.

Well, I've played and beat NSMB, which I hated, and I played Ratchet PSP, which sucked, so yeah.

I've also played and beat both Mega Man games on the PSP, and while great, Capcom ain't making more, so that's not a selling point.

Mega Man:Powered Up > any DS/GBA/GB platformer

But since you have already played that why not toughen up those thumb muscles and play Ultimate Ghouls n' Ghosts.

I tried UGnG, couldn't handle the "Jumping is like signing your death warrant, pal" gameplay.

And I have N on 360 and PC, so f-u.

What about importing Umihara Kawase? There's a demo on the Japanese PSP store.

It's an old Super Famicom/PS1 game that's getting a PSP port.

The DS fucking blows IMO.

If you want platformers with milimeter tall sprites go for it.

Not everybody is a graphics whore. Big sprites are nice, but gameplay has to be there before the graphics do, boy!
