DS Rom Cart Question
« on: March 17, 2008, 09:27:11 AM »
I've been considering the purchase of a Flash Cart for the DS. Frankly, I'm terrified of losing those little carts. But other Q's: Is it possible to run emulators on them? Could I put a GBA emulator on there or SNES9x or whatever?

Yes

You need a GBA cart to play GBA games

Yes to SNES

Get an M3 Real (w/ GBA Expansion Pack) -- this allows you to pir8 DS games, and it comes with the GBA cart to let you pir8 GBA games. You can also run emulators. Its very limited compared to the PSP, but you can play NES, GAmeBoy (Color), SNES, and Genesis. Only the NES and GB/C emulators are pretty good, the DS is really weak and cant even emulate SNES and Genesis as good as PSP

The Snes emulation is in my opinion completely worthless, it's so flawed it's hardly worth bothering with, you have to calibrate loads of shit with no proper way of knowing what's the best (although there's wikis where people list the best options) and even after that there's loads of issues left like the framerate is all wonky or there's missing lines or text appears behind speech bubbles etc etc. I haven't bothered with it in several months but I can't imagine it's gotten much better. Nes emulation on the other hand seems to be a whole lot smoother, I've played through Mega Man 2 a couple of times with no issues, but that's really all I've tried.

yeah i had the simply too, but i wanted a GBA cart for the eventual Mother 3 translation, and any other GBA games. so i just got the Real, cause its basically the next step. it supports SDHC, the GBA (and rumble if you got that as well), and better support (it doesnt get the MOOGLE SCREEN that has been plaguging crystal chronicles, while the simply does - which has since been fixed)

The M3 Simply and R4 are pretty much identical

The M3 Real and CycloDS among others are better

Thanks, but they don't have one with the M3 Real and the GBA expansion pack only. There is one with the M3 Real, gba pack and a rumble pack for $60, but I don't give a fuck about rumble.

2GB will suit you fine, i've fit up to 20 games on mine, depending on size. some of the higher-sized games recently are Ninja Gaiden, FF Ring of Fates, and Luminous Arc (games with voices, as you can tell)

I picked up an M3 Real Perfect about a month ago. I have both a 2GB and 4GB card, but I've only used the 2GB so far. If I could do it all over again, I would get a CycloDS and an EZ-Flash 3-in-1 slot 2 card, simply because I believe the CycloDS has better features. The M3 Real is just fine, though. I'm loving it!

What are these features?

Mainly a better interface (supposedly) and real-time saving with DS games. Say you're playing Contra and you just got to the boss of the level, save the game so if you die you can just load from that same spot instead of having to do the mission all over again. I LOVE me some save states on PC Emulators. The M3 has real-time saves on every game but DS games, but it's very possible that it could be released in a future update for it. The M3 team seems to be good about releasing updates. I haven't really seen anything about the CycloDS' update system.

The M3 Real is just so awesome because everything comes in the Perfect package. You don't have to worry about buying a separate slot 2 card or having to get firmware or whatever to get it to work. Everything just works out of the box.

I just posted the verdict just in case he didn't feel like reading the whole review. The CycloDS from what I understand has real-time saving and the best support in terms of updates. Sorry for getting sand into your vagina.
