Someone came into my store today looking to pre-order Persona 4.  At first I thought it was Himuro pulling a joke on me, but her vagina wasn't big enough to be Himuro.

I don't understand how P3 is linear to a fault either. Its structure is MUCH more open ended compared to other jrpgs.

I prefer not controlling my characters....battles were superfast and they could heal midturn.

Himu, they don't like Persona 3. Don't keep going. :)

I dont know why TVC defends P2 so much, the dungoen design in that game is fucking terrible. I'd take P3 random dungeons over that trash any day.

my biggest complaint with P2 is how annoyingly grindy the whole thing was. want cards? how bout talking to the same monster like 10x times and once you figured out the correct answers for a given conversation, the whole conversation aspect becomes a tedious affair of just finding that particular monster in a battle. you couldnt pass skills from a parent Persona to its child Persona either. not only that but once you summoned a Persona you had to spam the shit out of Fusion Spells for that Persona to grow and get decent in battles. P3 does away with all that crap and if you played your cards right in a fusion, you could have a kickass Persona from the get go, thanks to the boost in EXP it gets from S.Link and the abilities it inherits from its Parents in the fusion.

the dungeon in P2 are 'head scratching' bad, they remind me of Tales of Destiny dungeons, long tedious and not fun unlike SMT3 dungeons or heck even DDS. the underwater lab particularly was a fucking nightmare that almost made gave up on the game the first time.

and after the first full moon battle, you characters rarely get tired from dungeon crawling so it becomes a non-issue. I liked the fact that you could pace yourself and do a lot of sim or go dungeon crawling. it wasnt always talk to NPC #14 trigger cutscenes, go to dungeon rinse/repeat for the whole game. even tho P3 world is pretty damn small I felt it allowed for more freedom, than say DQ8.

P3 is pretty much my perfect Jrpg. I can't really come up with a major flaw for that game.

- Mature themes
- Minimalist story
- Non linear game structure
- Dual side gameplay makes the game have enough variety to stay interesting even 90 fucking hours in.
- Hard difficulty.
- Memorable characters.
- LOOT
- Battle system was nearly perfection on a dvd. Absolute balanced and more interesting than SMTN and DDS1+2's press turns. Genius effort because it wasn't about turns anymore, it was just about weaknesses.
- Unique premise.
- JUNPEI

and much more. If Persona 3 were my last jrpg, I wouldn't even fucking care.

EB can blacklist me for all I care, Persona 3 was the most enjoyable jrpg experience I've had since the PSX FF days.

How is that a flaw? To me it's just an evolution of talking to people in towns and stuff. Just making talking to npcs actually apart of the game and not an after thought. What's wrong the setting? Prefer more shitty fantasy and sci fi trappings?

On topic:

Error what do you think about the LOL GLASSES thing? I think it seems pretty neat, but a bit unnecessary. I mean, why can't they just cards?

Also, the premise sounds very vintage Megami Tensei-ish. Entering another world through the TV? Fuck yes dude. Good replacement for the traditional internet scheme they've used.

It seems to me the Persona is shown on the tarot and only they can see it with the glasses. Then they use the card to summon a persona.

Oh right, I forgot about Soul Hackers!

I liked Devil Summoner on PS2 a whole ton, too.  I didn't come close to beating it though, since it was extremely grindy and repetitive.

I would give P3 another shot if it were on PSP.  The visuals dun look good on my HDTV.

Wasn't there an Ultima game or some other classic PC RPG with this concept? Or am I hallucinating again...

The series has always had things like this:

Megami Tensei revolves around a dude who uses his computer to summon demons.

Soul Hackers has you step into a Virtual Reality world.

Digital Devil Saga is about a group of people stuck in a VR training module.

So on and so forth.

It's like this because of the source material. The book Digital Devil Story is about exactly what Megami Tensei entails, since it was apparently translated from book to game.

People here probably hate towns too.  Towns are great though, without them RPGs just become either collections of battles with occasional cutscene intermissions or collections of cutscenes with occasional battle intermissions.

I agree entirely. In P3, however, everything is tied together to form one cohesive whole that supports the game and its story: exploration, talking to npc's - who seemingly don't just tell you random shit either, but actual things that give the story more perspective, the relationship building itself helps support the game's title "Persona" since you're essentially a two faced person who changes his persona from person to person to fit your agenda. It's unique. There is no fluff. It's not typical jrpg fare we've been playing for 20 years, the whole go from town a get armor and weapons, go to dungeon, town b, go to dungeon, rinse, repeat and I think modern rpg fans should appreciate it. But no, you've got heavy traditionalists going ape shit because it's a little different.
