PORTLAND -- Bill Richardson described the conversation he had with Hillary Clinton on his decision to endorse Barack Obama as "heated" in an exclusive with NBC Nightly News today.
 
Both Richardson and Obama shared the spotlight this afternoon at a press conference and later in a sit down interview with NBC's Lee Cowan. (Please insert link to NN spot)

Richardson described the conversation that he had with Clinton last night "tough."

"It was tough to make the call, but I did. It got a little heated. It got a little tense. But it was understood, and I'm proud of my decision."

Also, Richardson's snub of the Clintons underscores what rotten people they surround themselves with. For example:The preternaturally jolly Terry McAuliffe is a good mad to have spinning for you in a pinch. But his good cheer dimmed when I asked him about Bill Richardson, who appears to have made an 11th-hour deal to throw his supporters to Obama. "How many times did Clinton appoint him?" McAuliffe marveled. "Two? U.N. Ambassador and Energy Secretary?" He looked at me, half-glaring, awaiting confirmation. "I don't know," I joked, "but who's counting?" "I am," McAuliffe said firmly.

I think there was similar quote from Bill Clinton himself, reported secondhand.

It was dumb to think Richardson would be obligated to endorse Hillary and extra dumb to let it slip that that's what they thought.  Don't insult a politician's ego by treating them 1) like a subordinate who is expected to fall in line and 2) a supplicant who only got their previous positions as a favor to be paid back at a later date.

That sort of gambit needs to come from a position of strength.  Don't say "I made you!" unless you can credibly follow it up with "...and I can break you!"

McNeill, a 72-year old Marine Corps veteran and outspoken Republican, calls himself a "news hound" who expected Obama to be an impressive and successful politician in the race.

But, he says, he's been disappointed not only with Obama's politics but with what he sees as profoundly unpatriotic statements from Obama's controversial minister and from his wife Michelle.

It's funny when people make a show of giving a fair shot to a politician they'd never, ever vote for.  "I was really gonna switch parties this time!  The 25th election cycle is the charm!"

I knew a complete dittohead, who I worked with occasionally that did the exact same thing.  After at least a year of relaying the freeper talking points du jour to me, he told me sometime in fall '04 that "I decided that I couldn't vote for Kerry because he had been dishonorably discharged.  I just can't support someone who has that on their record."

Just cop to your biases, peoples.  At the very least it hints at self-awareness.

Seriously, Mandark. Having frequentedly my local K&W a few times, I can safely say that it's also a terrible place to get a feel for politics, as basically all of the customers are over the age of 60 or are very near it.
