a saturday night of nerd nostalgia.
« on: March 22, 2008, 11:02:06 PM »
tonight, to celebrate willco's people brutally and unjustly murdering the only decent person in history just to get their dirty sheeny rocks off, i am going to have a NIGHT OF NOSTALGIA, where i lock down in front of the tv until the wee hours with the biggest fucking 7-11 big gulp i can find, a box of cheese nips, and some distinguished mentally-challenged console game -- just as i did half my lifetime ago when i was a proto-nerdlinger.

however, since i no longer have the amiga or the nes, i must now CHOOSE MY GAME FOR THE EVENING.

(also, cheese nips or doritos? can't decide.)

which game do i play until 4am in the morning, it must be an rpg or sports game or some other grindy shitty single-playerish game

1. lost odyssey
2. wild arms xf (via psp component)
3. ff7 crisis core (via psp component)
4. mlb 08 the show
5. oblivion
6. avernum 5 (via laptop svideo out)

CHOOSE MY DESTRUCTOR. if you fail, i will wind up running zul'farrak in wow with maf, tvc, and any other guildie fops, and you don't want to ruin the evening before jesus' resurrection like that!

The Show is good because it's not some RPG crap.

sure it is. what's road to the show if NOT an rpg? hell, most sports games are just trumped up srpgs that feature all male (and probably all gay) casts!

besides, fantasy sports grognards are probably the only folks grubbier and more lovelorn than gygaxian dice tossers

Lost Odyssey is probably the most thematically appropriate.

But why do it JUST tomorrow when you can do it tonight and tomorrow?  You KNOW that SM is basically like the ball pit at Chucky Cheese, except instead of balls it's LEWT.  And the loot you can't use you can DE.

I found Doritos edible during the three years from fourth through sixth grade.  Now just thinking about them literally makes me dry-heave (no exaggeration, just happened thirty seconds ago).  Cheese nips were never edible.

avernum 5 should be appreciated more

I vote MLB 08 or Wild Arms XF.

I still geek out like this all the time, my wife does pvp/arena in wow and I play RTS games until god knows when in the AM sometimes on weekends. It's good stuff.

If you aren't going to play WoW, playt some hot shots ps3

retching is the point?

I figured retching was the only logical point of cunnilingus, so I don't find it so strange that there's a market for consumer products that make one retch.

i'm just usually so worn out from the work week and the miscellanea of child raising -- as is my wife -- that casual wow and/or tv-on-dvd is about all i can muster. however, i was out running errands and i saw this nerdlinger crossing the street with a fuckin' BUCKET OF BIG GULP SODA and i said DAMN I WANT TO BE HIM TONIGHT and here i am!

Wild Arms XF.  It is fucking challenging just like SRPGs used to be.  Holy shit, I think it's the first hexagonal SRPG I've played since Dark Wizard on Sega CD back in 1994...how's THAT for nerdlinger nostalgia?

wild arms xf is indeed the superbomb AND it is nice and relatively hard (actually, it's nothing compared to classic SSG hex games, but it's definitely hard compared to say, fft or disgaea).

the hate it is getting bums me out because it seems reviewers and gaftards don't want the tactical or strategic components -- they just wanna make ANIMU FANTASY SQUAD X and push on through the story unencumbered by challenge or thought

I think gaftards are just used to stuff like Disgaea or FFT where they don't have to strategically plan ANYthing.  Wild Arms XF is far more complex in the sense that you actually have to constantly be changing classes since certain maps' objectives can only be achieved by having certain classes in your group, and that you actually have to study the map and where the enemies are located before even starting to place your characters.  In contrast, stuff like FFT can be beaten with pure dumb muscle.

I wonder how reviewers would feel today about something like Dark Wizard, which was way more difficult than any other SRPG I played back in the early '90s.

well, disgaea is a munchkin game -- it's about building a team to handle the optional challenges and learning how to effectively break the system. it pretty clearly advertises its lack of tactical depth these days. fft? well, fft is just fuck broken.

Does WAXF have Zone of Control or anything of the sort?  If not, I'm not sure if hex-based maps are a good idea, as they make it harder to restrict movement.

yeah, it does for certain classes -- and other classes can move through zoc unimpeded. there's also skills to lock characters to hexes, and to expand zoc.

It's really different from any other SRPG I've played in the last ten years.  It's hard to believe something this hardcore came out of the Wild Arms series, honestly.

lost odyssey, you can also be lonely and exert your inner vagina in the comfort and solitude of your nerd domain. then you can proceed to say how you never cried and you fuck pussies every night, cause you are in fact, a man.

GAF probably doesn't like the game because you can't push through it in one or two sittings without thinking and planning.  Most gaffers when playing games aren't really thinking about the game when they are playing it, they are thinking about all the .gifs and wise cracks they are going to use to zing the haters of their weekly "Game of the Forever."
