Battlefield: Bad Company (X360 BETA) FAILS miserably: Part 1
« on: March 25, 2008, 01:54:02 PM »
- Trying to join a game is ridiculous and horribly broken
- The image quality is horrible; there is an awful black crush on everything and it's hard to see (on both HDTVs and SDTVs)
- Your specialty weapons are not unlocked from the start, what a load of shit!
- You can't create your own squads and are randomly put in new squads all the time
- No Conquest (WTF)
- XBL gamers are incapable of teamwork

Meanwhile, Warhawk is getting expansion content.  Year of PS3 continues! :bow

First off, the game is way too dark and there's no in-game brightness adjustment.  I had to do it on my HDTV.  Which is for wankers.  Every game worth its salt has that feature built inside the menu.  It has a very muddy look to it and it's hard to see in rooms.  It's ridiculous.  I checked it out on my neighbor's plasma and called my brother, who is using a SDTV, and both had the same problem.  The image quality is awful.

Also, joining a game is still fucked up.  It's not fine now.

Why should I "learn to love" a particular game mode that a) XBL gamers not particularly good at it, b) is not as fun as gameplay modes offered by EA's competitors and c) CONQUEST IS THE BREAD AND BUTTER OF THE BATTLEFIELD SERIES!!!

uh, beta

This only goes so far.  I'm willing to excuse the network performance issues due to the beta - although it's still busted.  The image quality and gameplay mode issues are something that can't be excused by that word.

The Halo 3 and COD4 betas were much better.

apart from the graphics and the population of dickheads on xbl, i see nothing in your complaints (which seem quite legitimate for a multiplayer game) that can't be fixed before this launches in June

be sure to post that on their official forums, i'm sure they're taking all this feedback into account, unless this is beta just a "hey, remember this game, well it's still alive" type deal

Give it a shot, hyp.  I know there are a bunch of folks griping about it, but there are a good number of people that are enjoying it.  It is fun in spurts and if they cleaned it up, it'd be a great multiplayer shooter.  I really feel like its inferior version of Battlefield 2 at this point and not nearly as much fun.  Again, the fact that XBL gamers don't speak or communicate whatsoever transforms ATTACK & DEFEND into WINNERS & LOSERS, because defenders will always lose.

Typical XBL gamer: "Defender?  Guh!  I don't think so.  I'm going to drive this tank full of people to the enemy base and uh, attack them first! Kaboom!"

"Apart from the ability to see and the community that a multiplayer shooter depends on - it's all good!"

Oh, c'mon!  I highly doubt that they'll be able to institute more gameplay modes prior to its ship date.  From the video, this looks like it's as good as it gets - unless this is all just a ruse!

Here's the biggest problem... most of the issues I have addressed and complaints I have logged don't exist in prior Battlefield games.  Why create problems for a franchise where they didn't exist?

I think the most aggrivating part of that is that the game actually tells you that is joining a game, but then dumps you right back at the start menu, as if its saying, "LOL U GOT PWNED!" :lol

the purpose of a multiplayer beta is to test for bugs and glitches, obtain user feedback, and adjust accordingly

otherwise it's a demo, and not a beta

i'm sure it would be fairly easy to plug in a conquest mode, unless it's something they plan for dlc map packs and such (EA...)

i'd imagine in the full game you'll be able to set up your own squads, that would be pretty ridiculous to not include

as for graphics, i'm talking out of my ass here but there is the possibility they could tweak gamma settings or whatever and brighten up the overall viewfield a bit

i'll play some tonight and check it out

Oh, that's another good point, demi.

Vehicles suck.  There's not enough of them and Frontlines actually does have better controlling vehicles.  Everyone who tried to pilot the helicopter in the beta this morning died.  Everyone. :lol

First, this is a huge closed beta.  Let's get real.  This is more of a stress test and publicity stunt than an actual way for DICE to work on bugs and glitches.  Not saying they won't, because Infinity Ward found a bunch during their beta - but this not purely development stuff.

Why would you launch a beta with a gameplay mode that is not conducive to the environment you release it for?  XBL gamers are notorious for lack of teamwork, so you're going to release a beta that demands it and expect a decent amount of feedback?

Where are the vehicles?  Why do they control worse than they did in Modern Combat?

There are a ton of problems that exist in this beta that - again - did not exist in previous installments, on both consoles and PC platforms.

Sorry, Frontlines trounces this, just plays smoother and probably better

Battlefield looks nice too, and the destructability is definitely there... having a tank blow open your building and leaving you reavealed and naked, lol

There is a definite "darkness" about the level (I played OASIS), like it's too dark for what it is

Battlefield has that addictive leveling up feature however

That is, if the image quality wasn't complete crap.

well, i just spent twenty minutes staring at a "searching for games" screen which would either just boot me back to the quickmatch screen, tell me it couldn't find any games, or freeze up until i had to boot back to the dash

i'll try again later, but i'm only giving it twenty more minutes, because forty minutes of my lifespan is all i'm willing to give up to stare at a "please wait" screen

- The image quality is horrible; there is an awful black crush on everything and it's hard to see (on both HDTVs and SDTVs)

well, first you should make sure that your shit is calibrated properly.

turn off as many 'advanced' or 'enhancer' features as you can -- those will often crush blacks

then load up this picture on your 360: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/drohne/Brightness.jpg

first turn down brightness until the black background is as dark as it can get -- then turn it up until you can see all four numbers. there should be a setting where you can see all four numbers while maintaining the blackness of the background, but if there isn't, you might have to settle for two or three numbers

the 360's gamma is inaccurate, which won't crush blacks as such, but will make shadows overly dark...if your tv has a gamma setting, use that to make the picture somewhat brighter

Do you recommend using the X360's darkness options (cant think of the term offhand)? I think I have mine at darkest right now.

if you're using component, i think the 360's 'reference level' settings only apply to 480p. but the point is just to have a truly black background and all four numbers visible, however you get there.

You won't be banned, they gave out that DVD to people who pre-ordered at EB, it's their fault for not doing any sort of security. People did the same thing for OXM demo when Guitar Hero 3 was on it

- Still no CONQUEST (some journalist confirmed it's gone) WHAT-THE-FUCK!!!
- Image quality is still shit
- Unlocking specialty weapons is lame

I probably will cancel my pre-order if Conquest isn't put back in at the very least.  DICE can fuck off with this shit.

For some reason when you're using an assault rifle and blasting a guy 10 feet away from you in the chest, he doesn't die. You'd be better off shooting at shit than playing this shit.
