The Love Guru

Trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/theloveguru/

It actually sounds pretty funny, and not only that, but look!
Jessica Alba gained all the weight she threw up for Good Luck Chuck!

Justin Timberlake in a fitting role!

Verne Troyer! Again!

Is that a con?

My only issue with the trailer is that this character pretty much looks like every Austin Powers character he did smashed into one person, but I never really watched Austin Powers for Mike after the first one, I watched for how other actors played off of him, which is why Goldmember was such a massive disappointment. Fucking Beyonce.

Of the many words I would use to describe how this looks, "good" isnt one of them. Looks like shit. Id much rather AP4 than this shit. Im convinced that Myers' schtick has no real range beyond his AP characters and Wayne Campbell.

I think the It Comedian phenomenon is pretty interesting to watch.  It seems like for the past two decades or so, no matter how hilarious they are considered one year, the It Comedian wears out his welcome within the span of just a few years.  Actually, I think the phenomenon goes back even further, to at least 70s and 80s comedians, but I think they got more temporal mileage because success weren't as quickly milked and remilked back then.

Yeah, it dates back to the 70s.

Steve Carell is about to run out his welcome, shortly (if he has not already).  Some might say we've already moved on to any number of Apatow's crew!

However, if the comedian is able to make a successful transition to more serious roles (Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Jim Carrey), they can survive for a lot longer.

Steve Carell was never megahuge in movies, and that's a good thing.  He really needs to be part of a strong cast.  I don't think he could carry anything by himself.  But it's not like Hollywood hasn't tried to make him a leading man.

Yeah, Adam Sandler was trying to follow Carrey's career, I think.  I think Jim Carrey's career is just about the best that can be expected.

Actually, Ben Stiller does pretty well for himself, I think.  I think he knows the old formula of do a few for the studio and then you can do your own thing.

Eh, Steve Carell (40-Year-Old Virgin and Evan Almighty both made over $100 million, both his animated movies have made over $100 million) has made way more money that Stiller.  Stiller is not an "It Comedian" by any measure.  The latest It Comedian was obviously Will Ferrell.

Ben Stiller doesn't whore himself out to every offering and oversaturate the market with himself.  He never got really played out.  Will Ferrell played in every piece of shit offered to him and people got tired of it.

I'm positive Steve Carell has overstayed his comedic welcome and needs to move on to other shit. Playing the idiot in every movie he's now, it's getting tiring. Little Miss Sunshine was a great change for him, and Dan in Real Life wasn't too bad. Carell really needs to start exploring roles.

Adam Sandler I think peaked at Big Daddy/Mr. Deeds, afterwards it was just a steep downhill slope.

Jim Carrey is one of my favorite comedy actors, and he actually pulled off serious roles well. He's the king of physical comedy.

As far as Ben Stiller, I have to say he's only funny when he's playing an extreme. Ever since Meet the Parents he gets typecast as a neurotic normal guy, when instead every role he does should mimick Zoolander or Dodgeball, at least his character in them.

And Will Ferrell...ugh. Anchorman was a peak, and after that, rock bottom for life.

And Meet the Fockers made 500 mil worldwide.  Meet the Parents did 300.  I think Stiller's definitely made more dollars.

But you're right, he was never like Will Ferrel, where there's apparently the demand to have one terrible movie starring him every half year.

Edit:  Jesus, Night at the Museum almost made 600 mil (I paid dollars to see it <cry> [against my will!])

Ben Stiller has difficulties holding a film up by himself.  When paired with a good actor/director, he can hit paydirt - like Meet the Parents, Something About Mary, etc.

Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers were less about, "Oh my God, Ben Stiller!" but "Oh my God, Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro (and Hoffman! and Streisand!)"

He rarely breaks $100 million in films where he is the sole star.  The only recent change to that was Night at the Museum, which everyone is perplexed why it made $250 million.

whut

Stiller has been the main star in 6 movies that grossed at least $85 million, 5 of which grossed more than $100 million. Carrel has been the main star in 2 films that have grossed more than $100 million. So Stiller is the bigger name in term of being able to helm a successful movie

Quote from: Willco
Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers were less about, "Oh my God, Ben Stiller!" but "Oh my God, Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro (and Hoffman! and Streisand!)
:lol

In terms of films they've been in regardless of being the main star Stiller has been in 7 films that have grossed more than $85, including 5 that grossed more than $100 million. Carrel has starred in 5, but considering they were helmed by big stars like Ferrel and Jim Carrey...yeah. More people saw those films for Carrey/Ferrel than seeing Meet the Parents to see Robert De Niro

His last two films where he was the sole star, (40-Year-Old Virgin and Evan Almighty) grossed over $100 million.  That's ridiculous.  Neither had any other big name actors or directors attached to them.  They grossed that cash because of him.  Almighty being a bomb wasn't his fault.  Anytime an actor can get you $100 million on his own - that's awesome.

And yes, I do not include foreign figures, because the box office cut of the gross is so complex and disgusting (the studio doesn't see a gigantic amount of it, unlike domestic gross) that's really hard to argue which made more depending on what country the film made money.  Studios look at domestic gross first and foremost - not foreign gross and DVD revenue (those are seen to recoup losses or as "gravy").

If we're going to say who is more popular worldwide - it's obviously Stiller.  Carell is relatively new the scene (he only has three films, two with wide releases where he is the star).  But the entire argument was based on the It Comedian phenomenon, which is an American one, not a worldwide thing.

night at the museum was just a classic "fun for the whole family" formula and the advertising made it really seem that way as well.  most comedies don't come off that way and most ben stiller movies don't either.

I conceded a ways back that Still was not an It Comedian, based on the slow pace at which he releases star vehicles, and since he seems to pick non-It Comedian roles.  For the record, I wouldn't really say Carrel is an It Comedian either, regardless of how this convo ends.

He catapulted real quick with 40-Year-Old Virgin and I think he was advertised more heavily than the rest of his cast members with Little Miss Sunshine, got a starring gig in Evan Almighty, has the number one film in the nation right now (although, he is honestly sharing that with Carrey and the fanbase the property has) and has a major tentpole flick out this summer.  Tropic Thunder looks a lot better, but I bet Get Smart makes more money.

I still think Will Ferrell is at the end of the It Comedian phenomenon - its his till he bombs signficantly, but I think Carell is right there or almost right there.  His will be a short reign, though!
