Mythic ripped off Everquests basic MMORPG model
Blizzard ripped off Dark Age of Camelot for much of its basic progressive gameplay mechanics
Mythic is ripping off World of Warcraft for a good chunk of its gameplay mechanics.

Making the next BIG MMORPG requires that you rip off the latest big one and add some of your own shit so that you can steal from that demographic. Unless of course they wanted to steal Second Life's demographic, then they'd steal from that lol.

Warhammer is more like Dark Age of Camelot with an recognizable, popular license (especially in Europe-good for EA thanks to exchange rates) and way bigger budget ( most of Camelot was made on a shoestring budget in comparison ).

The huge WOW/WAR differentiator is instanced versus noninstanced PvP. WoW PvP is basically glorified counter-strike/fps style (with swords and sorcery instead of guns) matches between 10 to 15 players and a sort of e-sport team deathmatch in arenas. That works for a lot of people, but it's hardly leveraging benefits of a massively multiplayer game design in its gameplay. Camelot-style PvP is big, open, and unpredictable, and things like over/under population of sides can play a big impact on how well PvP goes on some servers.

I'm glad Mythic is ripping off some of the stuff from WoW for Warhammer, but I'm also glad they are steering clear of some of the other things. WoW is a great PvE game, but the only lessons I would take from its PvP ones are object lessons in how not to do things, not design tips on how to make a great MMO PvP game.

The combat video I saw of warhammer was REALLY underwhelming tho

I know you dont like WoW PVP, but its not nearly as bad as you paint it out to be. I had fun MOST of the time getting my s1 gear. AV is really the big WART these days. AB and EotS are a lot of fun and Arena and duels are as pure as PVP can get.

Doesn't WoW have entire servers dedicated to non-instanced PvP, though?

Yeah, they also have world PVP in outlands, which can be fun but ONLY on a server with a decent population balance. Muradin is not one of those servers.

Mostly alliance, a while back it was as bad as a 3 to 1, but I think its relaxed to a 2 to 1

Wow, actually according to WoW Census, Muradin is looking at:

4:1 in terms of characters created (takes alt situation into account)
2.6:1 in terms of active characters (takes characters being USED into account)

http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php?serverid=640&factionid=-1&minlevel=10&maxlevel=70&servertypeid=-1

MMOs borrowing from each other or not, Warhammer has the done the worst job of it by far. They have almost the exact same UI ffs. Party frames, minimap, and action bars are all in the same place. I've seen more creative UIs from the custom ones on WoW than that shit.

Not to mention that, like MAF said, the "RvR" (because PvP isn't cool enough they had to "borrow" this one from DAOC) looked awful.

Arena is reaching a level of complexity that is astounding for a video game that was originally meant to be geared entirely towards PvE. Of course, people still cry about counter comping and balance issues (BAWWWWW MY TEAM SETUP LOSES TO X TEAM SETUP EVERY TIME IMBA IMBA IMBA), but with this last patch it's actually probably the most balanced it's been in some time. And Blizzard has been quoted saying it will get better with WotLK. Rogues, Warlocks, and healers can roflstomp close to everyone 1v1 when specced/played right, but duels mean very little anyway.

Battlegrounds on the other hand are /snore. They haven't been the same since TBC and the new honor system. I cry a lot about casual players, and they do sometimes ruin battlegrounds at 70.

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF WARSONG FARMING HKS THAT DRUID JUST STROLLED BY WITH FLAG AND CAPPED WHILE YOU ALL SAT THERE WITH YOUR THUMBS UP YOUR ASS GODDAMN KEYBOARD TURNING distinguished mentally-challenged fellows DELETE YOUR CHARACTERS etc

Still, if it bothers me that much I should avoid them. So I do.

World PvP hasn't been alive since preBC either.

Willco: That is a relatively new thing. They've had tournament in the past, but this is the first time they've had a completely separate server for an Arena tournament. It's a great idea that should really be expanded upon in all honesty. Raiders have long been calling for a separation of servers between PvP and PvE so certain talent changes made for a specific aspect of the game don't cause balance issues with it's other half which is becoming a big problem. Unfortunately Blizzard feels the opposite. They have hard-on for the all-in-one package. The Tournament server is probably the most fun I've had with WoW in ages.

the battlegrounds are still basically wildly imbalanced counter-strike (since anyone, regardless of skill and gear, can be pitted with one another) with swords and sorcery instead of guns and grenades. It's a really cheap, limited form of PvP for a MMO game and a huge jump backwards from efforts like Dark Age or UO. Like I said though, it does work for some people and hey if you are having fun you're having fun.

Arena IS done well in the game, no arguments there. It's fun and uses ELO rankings to get good matchups. It's not the kind of PvP direction I want in an MMO game, but it does serve some people and serves them well.

This is particularly infuriating, the huge differences in what people do in PvP and PvE basically require a split to be done to some degree but they just won't do it.

Yeah, that's what's so maddening about battlegrounds. I can kill 2, maybe 3 baddies at a time, but there's not much you can do when you get gangbanged by 10 people at once. The point is that it's hard to play as a team when your team is fighting on the roads/middle of the map like distinguished mentally-challenged fellows while the other team caps objectives. The reason this wasn't as much of a problem 2 years ago was because there were no cross realm BGs. People from the same server tend to listen to each other. Now when you try to tell people what to do you get the usual "Fuck off nerd, don't tell me how to play a game that I pay for" response. But again, whatever. You are right; as long as the people are having fun I suppose it doesn't matter. There's not a whole lot they can really do to reconcile these issues at this point anyway.

*queues up for Arathi Basin*

I don't know why I do this to myself :lol

I dunno I did some DAoC pvp and it was fun when there was fighting, but unless you were part of some guild or something it was pretty boring. I think thats why I like WoW PVP, I dont need to be part of an establishment to have fun.
