UT3: You know, this isn't bad
« on: March 30, 2008, 03:42:55 AM »

LI'L CHIEF  :-*

Yeah, so I got this a few months ago and enjoyed it a lot (wretched single-player mode aside), but only recently has the community started to expand. There's an assload of really, REALLY good mods available now, plus Epic just released their first free map pack with a remake of Facing Worlds, which is just about the greatest CTF map ever forged by mortals. What pisses me off is that publicly-played custom maps on the PS3 version are few and far between because there's no autodownloading of anything except for mutators. WTF  :maf

Pleasantly surprised because I'd assumed that the game was pretty much DOA after the first month of sales. Oh yeah, and get the PCSpeedX mutator if you have the PS3 version and it runs as fast as the PC one (not frame rate, but movement speed).

Back to another round of Quakesturbating (aka playing against +10 bots with wacky mutators and custom character models)

You got it?  ANOTHER J-BORE-ER HAS IT!   :o  Let's play some time!

I haven't played it much myself, because usually when I go on there's not many games going.  I really hope the 360 version comes out soon, and has the same custom DLC support.

I almost nabbed this.  How is the port?  There is no cross platform play, right?

No cross-platform play.  The game looks and plays fucking great on the PS3.  No, it's not going to look or run as well as the PC version with maxxed-out settings, but it's an awesome console port.  Like Sho Nuff said, you can even get a mod that will speed the game up to PC levels.  You can also use a mouse and keyboard if you want; I just stick with the controller and the default game speed and it's fine.

Awesome. Add me to your friends list, I'm McWild. I usually run a server that has my name in it or "Tokyo," no idea what kind of ping speeds people are getting though.

Don't be a sell out.  UT should only be played on PCs.

I wish I could be playing this on my rocking new Quadcore, but oh wait, nVidia's drivers are utter garbage to the point that I'm incapable of using ANYTHING that uses D3D without getting a TDR error/hard crash after 30 seconds (the same problem nVidia's getting hit with the class action suit about).

Now I'm stuck with a budget GPU :gloomy

Vista drivers?  I rarely get crashes on my PC, except when I'm gaming in Vista.

But 360's failure rate is higher than PC's crash rate.

Yeah, because I want nothing more then to join a game and face a bunch of Master Chiefs and Clouds.

im sure if you could in the 360 version but not in the ps3 version you would want to...

explain this to me

can you install full mods in the ps3 version, or just maps?

how does it work, exactly?

I ask because I'm interested in maybe getting this used (I've seen it going fairly cheap)

rented this and found it kind of silly with a pad, even at a slowed-down pace. haven't got any convenient way to play it with mouse+keyboard.

edit: isn't mouse and keyboard support one of those things that microsoft frowns on? they've got tons of standards for xbl, some of which are beneficial, some of which seem pretty arbitrary

Also, one thing that confuses me about X360 having no keyboard/mouse support - erm, there are USB ports on the X360 , so really how difficult would it be to add that support? Surely, the machine itself is in the same boat as the PS3 so adding support should be fairly straightforward?

Microsoft is ADAMANT that there is no kb/mouse support in ANY 360 game. The only exception so far has been FF11.

That fucking sucks. What's your GPU and OS? And what's the nVidia class action suit you are talking about?

Vista, 8800GT, 4GB RAM. (Problem also appeared under XP, so that wasn't a fix.) I'm getting these things called "TDR Errors." Google for them and you will find a shitload of speculation and absolutely no solution. TDRs have been around for over a year with no confirmation/fix from nVidia. ATI for me in the future, plz :(

Microsoft's standards were engendered during the time in which the xbox was really struggling to differentiate itself from a junk PC....junk pc ports, junk pc parts...so NO MOUSE AND KEYBOARD WHAT SO EVER. And it was an understandable policy at first.

But now it just doesn't make any sense. The PS3 should be the console banning USB M/K, could thing Sony has made no real attempt to form some kind of console image  :lol

I'm using 2 x 8800 GTX and 4gb but I've never had that problem in XP.  Vista was fine also until I updated to the latest Beta driver.

I wonder if the driver installation messes up something in the registry since the problems seem to be random.

I'm afraid ATI isn't going to be any better. Fuck GFX vendors and their shitty Vista support. Fuck them.

UGH! I wanted to get back into PC gaming so badly, too :(  Oh well, I guess I'll take UT3 at 30fps on my 100-inch projector screen vs. UT3 at 100fps on my 19-inch flatscreen :/

Why don't you just install XP?  We got lots of Windows experts here if you need to know how to do it retroactively.

So uh Sho Nuff's info made me dig around the internet and here's what I found:

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080325-vista-capable-lawsuit-paints-picture-of-buggy-nvidia-drivers.html

Quote
Microsoft's data strongly indicates that the problems were real. Damon Poeter at CRN dug through the documentation to find that on page 47 of the PDF, NVIDIA drivers were identified as the cause of over 479,000 crashes, or just under 29 percent of all the crashes Microsoft logged. Microsoft's own drivers follow, at 17.9 percent, and the "Unknown" category takes third place at 17 percent. ATI is in fourth place (9.3 percent) and Intel in fifth place (8.83 percent).

Man, fuck nVidia.

That's pretty damning evidence.  I didn't know NV's vista drivers were that bad.

I wasn't even aware of Sho Nuff's issues until the last few days when I tested stability by looping 3dmark06.  The program would crash randomly in Vista but was able to run for > 12 hours continously in XP.

DX10 performance has been pretty disappointing so far.  Performance was supposed to increase with DX 10 but so far the opposite has been true.  I wouldn't be surprised at all if that has mostly been due to shitty NV drivers.

but you could be playing UT3 at -silly- fps at 720P on your 100-inch projector too.  :( /  :'(

Does UT3 have a DX10 mode?  Otherwise, I see no advantages in running it in Vista.

I have few problems with most games in Vista but that could just be due to the raw power of my system.

Crysis is the only game that I can't get to run at anywhere near 60fps in 1920 x 1200.  But then again, Crysis isn't very fast, even in XP.
