Nightmare on Elm Street didn't really start flailing in the box office until the 5th movie or so.

well it goes to say something when small movies with low budgets and no name actors have the same sort of pull with huge budgets and big time stars.

I just think that Hollywood needs to get more creative minds rather than special effects.  The saw movies are very cool in terms of style and writing.

They are so not cool.  Any time a writer admits that they just Google torture shit to write in the movie - you know they've got a template.  They might as well have a script generator.

Yeah, Maddox's Clancy generator is pretty good.  He should make one for Saw.  I was telling TVC that I imagine that Lion's Gate gives the next cheap Saw scribe a template; some general screenplay with blanks like Mad Libs.  The writer Googles "torture" and fills in the rest.

Welcome to last month

Saw is going to wind up like Halloween. In 15 years I'll be on some forum bitching about how AMC only shows Saw V and VI and never Saw I :lol

Although AMC made me happy all through October, that's for sure

They only aired it due to special occassion (it being Halloween and all).

But for the next Fear Fridays, AMC will continue showing Halloween IV, Prophesy, and whatever other bad movie they can think of

It's pretty obvious that most of you hold a bias to new horror films for whatever fuckwad reason.

Fact is, Saw used a formula and it worked. I'd have to say that in the past 3 decades, not many horror trilogies have been as good as Saw. Notice how I say not many, as in there have been better. Fuckwads.

Alas, AMC is back to their shit-tacular ways. Do you ever watch Fear Fridays?

Quote from: White Guy

In a joke, yeah. The first Saw had a lot of potential but was ruined by poor acting, writing, and newb film making; that being said, I still liked a lot of it. With respect to Halloween, the series is pretty bad, like most horror series. The first Halloween was great, but the sequels are pretty bad, extremely corny, and utterly predictable. It seems like every horror franchise is plauged by terrible, un-needed sequels.

I agree - it's pretty good.

III and up all suck from varying degrees. The concept of Myers running (whoops, I mean walking) around killing wayward teens can only go so far. Saw may not be great, but at least it triggered an evolution of horror movies. Men in masks or teeny pop horror (IE I Know what you did last summer lolz) are played out.

But, ultra gorey torture films like Saw are going to be played out reletively soon as well, mainly due to the copy cat nature of horror. Time magazine had a really good article on this a couple issues back

Saw didn't trigger anything.  The slasher genre was long dead before Saw.  As for the end of so-called "tenny pop horror", what do you think Saw is?  It caters towards a teenage and college age demographic.  Almost all violent horror movies do.  Why do you think they are always full of hot coeds?

Gory, torture films aren't really in.  They don't make a lot of bank.  The big thing is horror remakes, and that's what Hollywood is focusing in on now.  It's really an evolution of adapting all the Asian horror films that began with The Ring.

I don't even think Jigsaw is remotely memorable.  Oh no, Tobin Bell uses a puppet that rides a bike!

I'm just tired of all these wannabe 70s exploitation films and remakes.

The best horror film of this decade, if you can even call it that, is easily Shaun of the Dead in my book.

Saw I and II are crap. Haven't seen three, but my brother says that besides the gore actually stepping up a notch with a pair of Barker-inspired scenes and a dude drowning in pig parts, the movie was WORSE than the previous two. Given the godawful Elwes performance in the first and the distinguished mentally-challenged plot in the second, I suspect the horror lies in just what crap audiences will swallow.

TVC is right, though; the "righteous serial killer" schtick is pure antisocial goth kid fetishism. LAME.

The only remake that hasn't pissed me off, despite that I went in almost wanting to hate it, was Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead.  Which was a fun movie unfortunately titled after the Romero classic.

I had a decent amount of fun with House of a 1,000 Corpses, because I was drunk and Zombie showed some flair with his debut.  My expectations were much higher the second time around and sadly, I've seen The Devil's Rejects done better and shorter.  No amount of alcohol made that viewing more fun.

It was by no means a great movie - it was very music videoy and extremely flashy - but I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It reminded me of Maniac Mansion.  It's definitely a turn off your brain movie, though.  I like The Devil's Rejects, too.  It's not quite as entertaining, but Zombie's directing is about a zillion times better.  I'd like to see the Halloween series left alone as much as the next guy, but if they have to continue it, I don't mind Rob being attached to it.  He at least has some talent and maybe more importantly, a level of reverence to the source material.

This is where Phoenix Dark shows he knows nothing... again.  I hate these threads.

TIME is referring to the Splat Pack, which has absolutely nothing to do with Saw and for the most part, none of their films are related to Saw whatsoever.  The only one of them that's like Saw is Eli Roth's Hostel, which was in pre-production before Saw was released.

Zombie, Aja, Marshall and McLean make films they love from the 70s, not about lame torture crap.

Horror films in general are cheap movies.  This has nothing to do with Saw.  The highest grossing horror films have been remakes, not these non-existant Saw knockoffs you're talking about.  There was never an explosion of cheap horror films being greenlit due to Saw, you're just seeing a new wave of directors hit the scene.

I've seen basically the whole second act oh HoOTC, and couldn't control my urge to change the channel any longer. There's style, and then there's crass overexageration, and Rob Zombie can't seem to differentiate between the two.*

Pre-production.  Roth was talking about Hostel shortly after Cabin Fever hit the mainstream.  He was supposed to make The Box first, but that fell apart.

Hostel was in production before Saw? Are you sure? Saw came out in late 2004, while Hostel came out early this year. I know release date doesn't equal production time, but do you have a link or something?

Pre-production.  Roth was talking about Hostel shortly after Cabin Fever hit the mainstream.  He was supposed to make The Box first, but that fell apart.

I'll cede that to you fatass.

Seems like you were still wrong about this dittie lolz amirite:

Gory, torture films aren't really in.  They don't make a lot of bank.

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=saw.htm (all the sequels preformed rather similarly)

Do you want me to compare it to the numbers for the big Hollywood remakes like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead, Amityville, The Ring, etc.?

You'll lose again.

Saw franchise + Hostel /= major Hollywood movement

The Devil's Rejects is also not a torture film, moron.  Please stop talking about stuff you don't know about.

Shake when your in a glass house don't throw rocks and all that jazz...

Anyway the SAW movies were pretty good flicks IMO, I guess I'm the teen/college crowd they were appeasing too and it worked.

It made you think and was pretty clever with the twists at the end...2 sucked I'll admit that, but my god I've seen some crap horror flicks and Halloween, while classic, is no masterpiece by any means
