Star Ocean 1 and 2 had random battles, 3 did not.

SO3 had monsters on the map but would warp to a Battle Area. If you don't dig regular JRPG battles (like Active Time Battles) you'll probably like Star Oceans more action based battle system.

I never got around to Star Ocean last gen - are the characters annoying like FFX or good like Lost Odyssey?

The main character in the pics looks a bit androgynous-whiny-girly-man. Otherwise it looks very nice.

Are you impersonating 14 year old Nintendo fans from 1997 or are you serious?

It's fair to say that FF really came into its own on PS1 because FMV propelled its popularity to new heights. But PlayStation has done jack shit for DQ. It was huge before those platforms, the only thing PS brought were slower releases. And Game Boy did more for DQ's worldwide presence than PS family did.

Meanwhile like demi said, if SE wants to cultivate a new franchise they can do it wherever they want. This isn't an FF7 remake.
