oh yes, most next-gen games suck so much, people are way too forgiving because of the graphics, and there are a lot of newbies on the Internet who write about games

through this blur they forget that the gameplay and stories are often less deep, the lenghts far shorter and most of the premises completely unoriginal

i don't care about stories or "premises," i just hate that i am settling for inferior graphics when i could be playing them with enhanced lighting, textures, post-processing and shader effects that are the very power of xenos

no, more like I thought it was OK and that it had a great space opera atmosphere in spite of the loli bullshit

you know, on casual forums where people aren't jaded gamers with tons of weird political ideologies and play a bunch of PS2 games, people who like console RPGs play these games and enjoy them for what they are

but then again you don't tell that I promoted and enjoyed a lot of great classic games like Deus Ex, Vampire Bloodlines, Fallout, classic shooters, 2D Fighters, countless revered obscure titles, and how many others over the last three years or so on these forums

What about your "christ, Lair is so damn beautiful" thread?

http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=10195.0

Have you seen this? The models, the draw distance, the amount of polygons pushed on screen, the gorgeous-looking water streams, the THOUSANDS of individually displayed and animated AI soldiers all moving in unison? And all of this running in native 1080p? An amazing feat that based on Factor 5's sayings, is absolutely out of reach from the 360, and cements the PS3 as the most powerful console system released yet.

The gameplay is probably going to end up being so-so (just looking at dragons spitting fires like Star Wars ships shoot lasers is lame), but this is such a marvel of technical accomplishment. Wow just fuck WOW! There's hints of slowdown and screen tearing in this specific video but hopefully such things are ironed out in time for the game's release in mid-August.

it seemed like an impressive technical accomplishment with the overall sense of scape and the amount of stuff going on in the background at the same time that I've yet to see on 360, even if I was fucking pissed when I saw that the end game was grainy and rough around the edges, and that the resolution was far lesser than native 1080p on my screen.. Julian whoever is such a liar

but whether it is a great technical feat or not has nothing to do with its qualities as a game itself, which I found to be horrendous

I didn't really see the thrill in Portal either tbh. But I don't think I DESPISE much.

come on, it looks and plays like a cheap Half-Life 2 Source mod done by one guy in his basement, and it only got popular because it has a gimmick portal gun and because it has a corny nerdy premise and a villain that vaguely makes you think of HAL-9000

Fun is too subjective to be a quality criterion, sorry.

Quote from: Edsger W. Dijkstra
In our naivety we were considerably disturbed by the discovery that over here the interface between supplier and customer is very different from what we were used to: under the slogan "Satisfaction guaranteed", the American supplier leaves the last stages of quality control of his products entirely to the customer. At first sight it seems very practical and economical, for if your customer turns out not to demand high quality, why bother? But I fear that the attitude is penny-wise and pound-foolish.

My modus operandi was to design what according to my standards was the very best thing I felt I could realize. My customers used to be delighted with the smoothness of the service provided by what I had offered to them. That was, of course, nice, but somehow secondary. For me it was much more important to demonstrate that the job could be done excellently and to raise the quality standards of the profession. I am now beginning to understand slowly why such developments hardly took place here.

As soon as unqualified "user satisfaction" is accepted as quality criterion, you are in danger of faulting Albert Einstein for the fact that the Theory of Relativity is too difficult for the average highschool kid. You are also in danger of discovering easier ways of achieving "user satisfaction", for instance by making your customers "feel good", something that can be achieved by propaganda instead of by the quality of your products. And this is probably what is euphemistically denoted by "the post-industrial shift from manufacturing to marketing".

Yes.  American civilization is flabby and needs an injection of rigor and discipline, which in the context of RPGs means grueling dungeon crawls with effectively constrained resources, not stupidly abundant healing items and magic

Not taking advantage of a few cheap tactics/game balance holes is one thing, but when you have to impose a set of complex constraints on yourself to make it challenging you may as well just design your own game.

honestly though, I don't mind FF8's brokenness as much as FF7's since hey, they were trying something different.

complex restraints?

Don't use GF's so much and don't use so many items.  I don't see what's so complex about that.

BTW, this is an issue with all Final Fantasy games.  The game becomes ridiculously easy after a certain point.

It's kinda complex because it's not at all clear-cut.  "so much", "so many".  The thing is that if you don't use GFs/items/spell drawing at all, you're cutting out an important and (potentially) interesting part of the game system, making the game duller, but then if you abuse them you're also making the game uninteresting.  You have to find some happy medium, which means you have to balance the game yourself, which means you have to do the battle planners' job for them.  This is different than just foregoing a few specific unbalanced spells/items/combinations.

FF3/4/5 and 9 never become ridiculously easy unless you grind excessively (which is discouraged by diminishing returns from the XP curve) or take advantage of certain limited opportunities for abuse.

It's not that hard!  Instead of using GF's to blast everyone to death in every battle, change it up.  It's fun and leaves it to different ways to play the game.  If someone wants to exploit something in the game and it makes it fun for them, that's fine!

The point is FF8 is like jesus on a cd.

might I suggest RPGMaker 2003 for all your self-service RPG battle balance needs?  You get even more freedom to set stats how you like, and you don't even have to sit through 12-second loading animations for every battle

By the way, when I play FF8, I usually limit myself to 2-4 Draw-Stocks per monster species per level range (i.e. the counter resets when the enemies get new spells) and one summon per GF per dungeon in non-boss battles.  I'm just annoyed that I have to make up rules like this.

The other thing is that FF8 has a potentially interesting mechanism that's intended to limit GF use --- their limited HP, with the associated level system and item set --- but doesn't come anywhere near achieving that purpose due to the crap damage enemies do and how rarely they attack.    There are so many broken mechanisms in that game.  It's the only FF that would be really worth remaking if they fixed the problems (though I doubt they would)
