Army of 2 demo impressions go here
« on: April 02, 2008, 01:57:02 AM »

Looks ok, the gameplay is mindless.  AI is crummy, shooting is loose and the cool coop mechanics(which i tried online) seem somewhat forced and just a pain more than anything.

Good idea, bad implementation.  Also, I could not figure out what the fuck the story was.

it's like EA told its Montreal studio to make the dumbest military shooter possible to cater to the lowest common denominator so that it'd be a hit

Speaking of DS, is it scary?  I couldn't play Bioshock or COndemned.

DS is probably about as scary as Gears. I was worried I wouldn't be able to play Bioshock but it wasn't that bad. How far did you get?

I played bioshock's demo twice.  The 2nd time through I lost it when the screaming lady ai ran at me in the bathroom(didnt do that the first time through).

I got super freaked out and decided I couldnt play the full game.  Still bums me out.  1st person scary games are too fucking much.

Does it rely on scary things like monsters screaming if you cant see them or stuff like that?

the only scary part in bioshock to me, is a room where you walk in and mist fills the room, then leaves, you look around and no ones there

so you go grab a potion or something on this wall, turn around and theres this scary doctor dude with a machete RIGHT BEHIND YOU

almost pissed mah pants as i shot him in the face

That sounds pretty much, like the worst thing in the world.

edit: this dude?  no thanks

Dark Sector's atmosphere basically consists of you going "Oh shit my dude is infected with a disease! I can throw around this little twirly blade thingy and lop people's heads off! Awesome! Look at that blood! Hell yes! I just sliced that dude's leg off! Woo!"

The story is okay, I guess. Main character is double-crossed by government. Main character's best friend who has the same infection as him is the bad guy. Oh no, tragic plot twist. Blah blah. Nothing you haven't seen before. The game play is fun though. Throwing the blade and then controlling it in mid-air like Xena: Warrior Princess is freakin sweet. I really HATED fighting anything other than regular humans, though. Stupid infected monsters sucked. I think I finished the game in about 6 or so hours? I'm not sure because I played it over 2 days and didn't really keep track of time, although I didn't play it that much because I've had papers due the past week. It's a great rental but I really wouldn't recommend buying it.

I'd even go so far as to say that Army of Two has more replayability than Dark Sector. At least with Army of Two you have multiple guns and upgrades and co-op. Plus the levels in Dark Sector aren't really memorable and they all feel the same. Being able to use different elements with your throwing blade-thingy is pretty neat but feels a bit gimmicky. You're better off just using a power throw and aiming for the head. Even with the guns in Dark Sector, you don't really feel like you're accomplishing anything. You're better off to use the throwing blade thingy than to shoot someone.

I can't really comment on which game has the better versus multiplayer because to me they're both pretty crappy. In Army of Two you at least have objectives and everything is fairly balanced. Dark Sector's versus is absolute garbage because of the cheap ways you can kill someone. "OH HAY I'M BEHIND YOU PRESSIN B AND KILLIN YOU IN ONE BLOW LOLOLOL!" Whatever, though. It's like trying to figure out if shit with corn or shit with peas is more nutritious for you, either way you're eating shit.

What's with the backlash? The fuck games do you guys play? It seems like anything that isn't some obscure Japa-mystery turn-based RPG gets punted around here. It's fine, the game isn't great, but it looks wonderful and plays pretty well. It's not new ground, it's ot exactly thrilling, but it's worth a rental, especially if you've got someone to co-op with. We've got a board full of Demi all of a sudden.

It's not designed well. It doesn't take advantage of its premise, has a shitty cover system, is written by my ass, and is inferior to other games being released with similar feature sets in the same time frame.

I'm not usually this picky, but Army of Two promised a lot and failed. The cool stuff that EA showed when the game was in development is nowhere to be found.
