You should watch Woman in the Dunes which, along with the book, is a must for any serious japafag.

yes

you can certainly see the beginnings of a lot of parallels with many modern anime in the film woman in the dunes.

you should definitely watch.

I haven't watched anime since... Dec 2006?

I got halfway through Eureka Seven (last thing I watched), it was a really fantastic show, shame I couldn't stomach my way through the rest of it. I thought the English dub was really well done.

i just found out there's a free anime fest tomorrow

but i'll most likely be addressing my car

Jungle Emperor Leo
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 11:30 am, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

Adapted from a manga comic by the legendary Osamu Tezuka, this charming fable directed by Yoshio Takeuchi is a treat for animal lovers of all ages. Leo, a majestic white lion, rules the jungle at the foot of mysterious Moon Mountain, living in harmony with the other beasts – until humans show up and threaten to shatter their peaceful existence. 1997 / 100 min., Rated PG, Dubbed in English.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

      Atagoal: Cat’s Magical Forest
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 2:30 pm, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

Hideyoshi is, literally, a fat cat who loves nothing more than gorging himself on tuna and rocking out at the annual town festival in the magical land of Atagoal. He gets into trouble, however, when he accidentally releases the imprisoned Botanical Queen Pileah, who has sinister plans for Hideyoshi and his feline friends. Mizuho Nishikubo’s film is fun for the whole family. 2006 / 81 min., suitable for all ages, Japanese with English subtitles.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

5 Centimeters per Second
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 5:00 pm, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

The title of Makoto Shinkai’s wistful coming-of-age film describes the velocity at which cherry blossom petals fall – a metaphor for the impermanence of human relationships that is the theme of its three connected stories. Each story takes place at a different point in the lives of the film’s three main characters, from puppy love thwarted by a family move, to an unrequited teenage crush, to melancholy reminiscences in adulthood. 2007 / 62 min., unrated, appropriate for all ages. Japanese with English subtitles.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

Appleseed: Ex Machina
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 7:00 pm, Meyer Auditorium
Special Guest: Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica.

The year is 2138. Society is divided between humans and peaceful cyborgs developed to prevent the wars that killed half of the world’s population. But what happens when nefarious forces find a way to make them violent? Inspired by a popular manga comic, Shinji Aramaki’s sci-fi braintwister offers state-of-the-art animation, thrilling action scenes, and a provocative meditation on what our world might become. 2007 / 105 min., PG-13, Japanese with English subtitles.

Part of the Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Copresented with the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Otakorp, Inc.

I'm picking away at Oh! Edo Rocket, GITS: SAC, and Denno Coil.  Haven't watched too much anime lately. It's been Twin Peaks and LOST instead.

Appleseed Ex Machina was like Woo gave Aramaki a half-grin and said "You've seen all my movies. You know what to do." And then Aramaki took that and mixed it with his usual Bubblegum Crisis routine.  I dunno. It was inoffensive, but I didn't like how they portrayed

And I need to start Full Metal Panic but I haven't got around to it yet.

if you want to get into FMP i suggest watching Fumoffu first. It is better in every way possible. After that check out the mostly average first series Full Metal Panic, and finally, Second Raid. Which is apparently the first FMP done right.

I watched Evangelion at the height of Evangelion fever in 1999-2000 and thought it was soooo overhyped. Good show, but not NEARLY as good as others say. Most overrated anime...really, EVER.

I think GitS: SAC is best when watched dubbed. When you watch it subbed there's so many phrases and shit and you have to understand and contain all of that information in a short while. It flows best when watched dubbed imo.

Are you fucking kidding me?! Not that I should be surprised considering what led up to it, but does Eva really just end with an hour-long rambling angst-fest? I've never prayed so hard for a giant robot battle in all my life. That shyt was ridiculous.  :zzz :zzz For most of the series, it's your basic monster-of-the-week stuff with a healthy dose of teenage angst and only a few brief hints at a larger plot, then in the last few episodes it's like HOLY CRAP LET'S CRAM AS MUCH PLOT IN HERE AS WE CAN PLOT PLOT DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE BUT OH WELL PLOT PLOT OH YES PLOT ALL OVER MY FACE!!!! Then in the last two episodes it's like, oh well sorry we couldn't resolve the plot at all for you like were probably expecting, but here's some shit we wrote while we were totally high last weekend and it seemed pretty profound at the time. Sorry we couldn't be arsed to even animate it, but that's shit costs money.

Does End of Evangelion somehow redeem this whole crazy mess, or should I just abandon all hope? :japancry

I've seen most of the more well-known movies: Akira, Vampire Hunter D (& Bloodlust), Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Perfect Blue, everything by Miyazaki, and some of the recently released stuff like Appleseed, Paprika, and Tekkonkinkreet.

That's good, because that's the way it's going to go down. They shouldn't give me so many choices; should I watch the Director's Cut of the last few episodes, should I watch Death & Rebirth, should I watch End of Evangelion? And it even if I watch all of it, it still won't make any fucking sense anyway.

Just watch D&R then EoE. The subtleties of the Dir Cut final eps would probably be lost on you if you havent seen it in a while, but these last episodes are really well done. Besides, End of Eva is basically a sort of alternate for the last two episodes of the series. They both cover the same basic themes in their own way.

End of Eva makes a lot more sense than the first cut Eva episodes 25/26. The Dir Cut 25/26 make more sense than the original cuts. The last minute of EoE doesnt make sense but thats ok, that moment is throw-away. EoE is pretty brutal, I think you'll like it.

BTW, I also started watching Full Metal Panic! AND Fullmetal Alchemist today.  :o

Ugh. I'm tring to go through FMP right now. It's okay, but Fumoffu is so much better. FMA is top 10 material.

I thought about watching Fumoffu first (my brother has both) but I decided to watch regular FMP first. Watched Vol.1  last night, and it seems pretty decent so far.
