Amazing what a new TV can do

The lady and I bought a new HDTV (Sharp Aquos 42" 1080p) for our bedroom a few weeks ago and we just had it calibrated the other day by her brother and I gotta say that it's pretty damn incredible what a difference a properly set up HDTV can make.  Everything looks good, even shit I thought wasn't that impressive to begin with is now something to see.  Hell even Halo 3 looks nice.  I already own 4 other HDTVs but I either have 'em set up all wrong or Sharp is now in possession of alien technology and is selling it to the masses.  The PS3 and 360 never looked so good.

calibration ftmfw.  i read a lot of avsforums before i bought my 50" 1080p panny plasma, and holy shit at the difference once i found the *sweet spot* regarding settings.  the stock settings are laughable.  most sets are blasted on VIVID mode at the stores and people think it looks good that way.   ::)

nice. setting shit up right can make a huge difference, yeah -- most tvs look ridiculous on default settings. if you're interested in calibrating your other tvs, digital video essentials just came out on bd: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Video-Essentials-Basics-Blu-ray/dp/B000V6LST0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1207346290&sr=8-1

I wouldn't mind picking that up but I just called Angie's brother this morning and he's coming by this weekend to fix our other sets.  Plus I have still have nightmares about the time I screwed with the geometry on the first hdtv of ours....I don't think I better touch any maintenace menu again.   

But it looks like I owe Adam a beer.  The punk.

I fuged with the Geometry settings for my 27" Samsung HDTV (CRT) and yeah, I regret doing that too. Fortunately I didn't go wild with it.

Drohne posted one for use in checking if RGB full range should be turned on or not.  It's saved on my PS3 right now.  I can post it up later if you want.

that's just for setting brightness...that dve blu ray has a bunch of other test patterns and a color filter
