But there's a twist. I didn't get all the details as I just found this out through a mutual friend, but he's marrying some other Mormon broad. Since the ceremony is taking place in the temple, nonmembers of the church (ie his family) are not allowed to attend.  From what I hear this has caused a huge rupture among the family. His brother is trying to "talk him out of it" but I doubt he'll get very far with that.

I'm just a bit shocked, because from what I can remember their family didn't even practice any religion, and growing up he didn't seem like the type who would get so easily sucked in to this. It was all very sudden, too. Apparently both his "conversion" and his meeting this woman are somewhat recent and the date of the marriage was set at two months after the proposal.

Up until I heard about this I wasn't even aware that only card-carrying members of the Mormon church were allowed to be present. Wtf?

Anyone else have friends who hopped aboard the religious fanaticism train out of the blue?

Quite literally.  Even as a Mormon, you have to be approved by your bishop to enter the temple for any reason - and when you're approved, they give you a card that says you have the go-ahead.

I knew a kid who converted from Judaism to Christianity in high school for a girl. In the end he either never dated her or only dated her for a few months, too.

He was going to school to be a priest, now I don't know what he's doing. Crazy.
