Going Postal.

Quote
Meanwhile, Sky One is to turn Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal into a television drama, following the ratings success it enjoyed with The Hogfather, starring David Jason.

The show achieved the highest ever audience for a multi-channel commission, with 2.86 million viewers.

Going Postal, to be shown over two 120-minute specials in 2009, will be the third of Pratchett’s Discworld series to be turned into a drama by Sky, following a dramatisation of Pratchett’s The Colour of Magic, which is to be screened over Easter weekend.

wife really liked this book, although she's gagging for wyrd sisters and/or guards! guards!

given that wyrd sisters is a massive riff on macbeth, i'm honestly surprised they haven't done it, like, first

i have both BBC full cast adaptations for Wyrd Sisters and G!G! if you'd like for me to upload them for you

i think i have them all

G!G!, Mort and Wyrd Sisters.

They, um, vary in quality, to be polite but they're not bad.  I think the best of them is probably G!G!

edit: left out small gods.  THAT'S the best of them, i think

night watch is hit/miss with me. guards! guards! was awesome, and carpe jugulum was good, but some of the middle ones like feet of clay are snoooooore recycle

pratchett's consistency is shockingly good overall, though -- his only low points were equal rites and pyramids, the former because it's unfunny and poorly paced, and the latter because it recycles every stupid joke from color of magic through sourcery and none of the good ones. also i did not like mort from the same period, although most folks consider me insane for saying so

I've read ummm

Colouuuur of Magic
The Light Fantastic
Small Gods
Equal Rites
Night Watch

I also got The Fifth Elephant but haven't read it yet.

Honestly, reading them In Order is kind of a dumb idea, the early ones were way boringer than the newer ones. I think it took a book or three for him to really get his bearings and go from "parody" to "inspired riff."

i'll agree with that

but i started reading them in the early 90s shortly after the release of Good Omens.  I think wyrd sisters is the first "new" book in the series that i recall buying.  so i've been able to see the progression.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld

wow i've been reading these a long time.

i'm the wrong person to ask, i think because i really do love them all, even the "bad" ones.

if i must make suggestions

small gods
soul music/ moving pictures
jingo
the truth
going postal and making money (really my two favorite, i think)
mort/ reaperman
night watch

there is a terrible lack of rincewind and granny weatherwax in your recommendations :punch

i would go with

small gods
guards! guards!
wyrd sisters
lords and ladies
interesting times
going postal
making money
night watch
the fifth elephant
eric
carpe jugulum
moving pictures
reaper man (the only death one i really liked)

i really didn't like soul music, sourcery, mort, monstrous regiment or masquerade

hated pyramids and equal rites

thought i loved the color of magic and the light fantastic but they feel almost TOO douglas adamsy -- good douglas adams, mind you, but still very derivative

although rincewind uber alles

the rest are all good fun

well i can't really suggest rincewind w/o having someone read the full epic saga from TCoM to The Last Continent.

equal rites is horrible.

pyramids is fun, but would be covered better by small gods.

but really, read them all.  they're nearly all excellent and aside from equal rites, worth your time

man, i am years behind in Pratchett. I read them religiously from The Color of Magic (yes, I'm so old that I bought the very first Discworld in its original paperback printing) 'til about 1996 or so, then just got burned out. Much like I did with P.G. Wodehouse (Jeeves & Wooster etc). It's like gorging on a box of chocolates - just got sick of them. Maybe, just maybe, I could go for one now though. What's the consensus best Discworld in the past decade then?

i feel you on the wodehouse.  though i still love it, i can't sit there and religiously read a book of it.

my favorite recent book is Going Postal followed by Making Money.
