Mawio Kart Wii Wii With Wheel.
« on: April 10, 2008, 09:39:58 AM »
This came out today in J-Land.  I picked it up along with an extra wheel; the game comes with a wheel and only costs 5100 yen, which is surprisingly low for a game and (yet another Wii controller) accessory.  Better than the zapper (lol) price.

I played the first circuit in 50cc mode (karts only) and made the mistake of picking automatic drifting; I glossed over the menus really quick and thought that was transmission for some reason.  So I start up and find I can't do anything but use items and hit the brakes; there's no drifiting or jumping, and I'm thinking the game sucks.  The first three tracks in the mushroom cup are also pretty bland made it quite boring.  On top of that, the AI seemed to continuously receive the (unavoidable) blue shell and POW items, where as I never got either one once.  It made things annoying.  The fourth track has much better design than the first three, and that made things better.  Same goes for the game play once I picked manual powersliding, which gives you back your jumps.  Powerslide into turns and you gain a burst of speed, just like the previous title.  No snaking this time around, however.  The Wii wheel casing you get with the game works great.  Turning is no problem; the controls are very responsive.  If you don't like or don't have a wheel casing, there are other control set-ups available.  100cc mode is for bikes only; I tried this briefly and found the bikes were of course faster, but also a little more difficult to control.  Sliding in particular feels different.  100cc class is a mix of both karts and bikes.  Battle mode seemed just as fun as ever, although with so many players in the same arena, it took forever to win.  There are older tracks from all the previous games; my favorite Mario Kart is the original and the regular (and battle mode) tracks do not disappoint.  They have been recreated to have a very SNES-like feel in both their textures and music.  Fans won't be disappointed.

I *HATED* Double Dash and never really got into the DS Mario Kart, but I am liking Mario Kart Wii so far.

sounds like an accurate recreation of the mario kart ds ai.

couldnt give a shit about the Mario kart franchise becuase its lame, but good motion controls and a competent racing game is one sizzling combination. I'll wait for Polari to get it

Scenester, it's better than Excitetruck, control-wise.  Speed and track design?  The jury is still out.

Double Dash is one of the biggest turds Nintendo ever shat out.  Never played the DS version but a few times because of the snaking.

I found Mario Kart DS "meh."  Kinda the same with NSMB.  Two games I should retry, I suppose.  Hotel Dusk was fucking boring.  GAF still owes me my money back on that one.

Would have me believe? I own it and it's the best MK hands-down.

Also, DD >>>>> MK64.

Although NSMB is... It's GOOD, just not... well, Super Mario Land 2 good.

I don't know how anyone could hate MKDS, it's probably the best in the series. It's definitely better than DD and 64.

Quote
The other major complaint is how badly they screwed up battle mode. NO free for all, ONLY teams! This is a HORRIBLE AND UNFORGIVABLE decision. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING, AHHHH!!! Balloon Battle doesn't even play like balloon battle anymore... popping opponents balloons just gives your team points... and losing all three of your balloons doesn't even eliminate you from the game... you just get three more afterwards. I doubt I will even touch this mode anymore. :P

There is NO WAY to play without using teams. If you have three players you either need to do a 2 versus 1 or you need to turn bots on to even the teams out.

You can turn CPU bots completely off, but if you turn them on it looks like you cannot adjust the amount you have on (only the difficulty level). So if they are on... you get 12 players total in battle mode no matter what.

Battle mode is also always based on time. Once the time runs out, the team with the most points (popped balloons )wins. There is no way to play it as a "last man standing" game like you used to be able to. (If all of your balloons are popped.. you immediately get three more)

garbage

I dunno, I played MK DS online when I got it and the snaking shit made me never play it again.  I'll go back and try it now, but the Wii version is the best in my book after the original, which remains at the top IMO.

I just played a shit ton of multiplayer with my wife; she doesn't want to stop!   :o  We did some online races together...the frame rate takes a HUGE HIT (like 20fps) but it stays "smooth."  No lag to speak of, at least locally.  About to try by myself to see if it's any better, but whoever I've been leeching off of the last few months may have just noticed from the Wii (this was the first time I played a Wii game online), so I need to set up my own connection first.

The snaking sucked, but the tracks, gameplay, and even single player modes were really good. I just played local games with my gf and friend who both have the game and it was great.

This was kind of funny.  When we were playing, all of a sudden in an apartment either above or next door, someone started moving around frantically and it sounded like they were PISSED.  Then it got quiet and the connection was lost.   :lol  I checked again and the connection is still there (and still sans password!), but I can't connect to it with my iPod Touch or DS/Wii.  I still have my old Nintendo USB wi-fi adaptor so I can use that in boot camp if worst comes to worst, but I already found a solution for Mac OSX using internet sharing...my DS connected no problem...iPod is a given.  This means I can get the Wii online this way, too.

Admiral, MK Wii has some MK DS tracks, BTW.

The Coconut Mall stage also makes great use of your Miis.  They'll appear on ads in store fronts and will be driving cars back and forth in a part of the track.

Looks like no multiplayer GP.   :'(  You can choose to do versus on tracks and get ranked like in single (the CPU is also still there) or do it in teams.

Yes, but you do play through a sequence of tracks that you choose, with your friends, with all the CPU characters still on the track, and rank up/down, complete with the same style of ending you'd get when you complete a cup in single player, so it's not that bad.  You could simply play all four tracks on one cup and it would be the exact same thing as playing single player.

Besides, fuck all that shit...online or offline multi is where it's at.  There is nothing better than racing with a full track of other human players.

mario kart super circuit :bow :bow

Yes.  MK Wii is the first one since the GBA version that I have enjoyed.  I still think the SNES version was the best though.

What is the Koopa Cape, is it like the Feather?

Haven't even seen this yet!

In regards to items, the online and versus matches I played last night had very, very few POWs appear, and even fewer blue shells.  It only felt like an overkill when I was playing single player match races.

why do you keep calling it "wii wii"

So it's essentially the same shit right?

You're going to stick to the motion controls?

Yeah, basically.  I want to find out what it's like to use a pad and then I'll see.  But it's fun using the motion controls...feels like a nice cross between the arcade Mario Kart(s) and Excite Truck.  I remember reading that you can't do some stuff(?) with this set-up, but what?  Tricks on the bikes?  I dunno...nothing feels like it's missing.

Also auto drift is perfect for "casuals."  My wife was getting within the top five (even a few first places!) on her first time playing, and she has never played a single Mario Kart game before. Give someone a Wiimote slapped into the wheel and they're gonna love this.

the original mario kart filled a need -- it was 2 player console racer when consoles couldn't do any better. mario kart 64 failed as a racing game, but its battle mode was tremendous fun...even though it only had one good map. the rest of the series doesn't exist in any meaningful sense. i don't know how nintendo can seriously offer a functionless plastic hoop for sale, how they can seriously discuss this object in roundtable interviews, or how people can go out and spend actual money on it

The best thing about Super Circuit were the original Super Mario Kart maps.  It made for a good portable game.

Again, in Japan at least, the wheel comes free with the game.  It makes holding the controlling for driving games a lot easier.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought MK64 was a good battle mode and nothing else. DKR64 was easily better, but because it didn't have recognizable mascots and had only two good Battle Mode maps, people passed it over.

I still think Double Dash was a great game. I can understand why people wouldn't like it, but I never felt that it was bad. Same with Mario Kart DS: snaking online might be a downer to a lot of people, but the game is still quality.

Unfortunately, I never played Super Circuit except waaaay back when, when I played a few minutes on a GBA demo station around the time it came out.

But whatever, this game is just the warm-up for F-Zero Wii anyway.

I played MK64 at a friends' house and waited for DKR.  I wasn't disappointed, although some of my friends never agreed.  It was by far the superior racing/1p game.  The battle mode sucked, but I was somewhat let down over MK64 battle mode too.  What do you mean only 4 tracks?

I'm looking forward to this game, though.  Good impressions LE, keep them coming for those of us in the US.
