So, I'm thinknig about maybe buying a computer.

Dell apparently sent me a $100 gift card in January that I didn't know about until last night.

At the same time, I've been looking at picking up either another PC or a laptop for myself. Gaming is a lost cause, as I don't do much of anything on that front, but pure computing power is what I'm concerned with.

I've got an XPS Gen 3 now (3.6GHz P4, 2GB DDR2 PC4200 RAM, X800 XT), and I'm thinking of getting a $600-$700 PC to replace it. I'll probably turn that PC into a Linux box at that point or something, but the ATI card seems to be the problem there.

So, I dunno really why I'm posting this. Just to chit-chat, I guess.

I like Dell Vostro machines. No idea how, but they end up being cheaper than the FreeDOS and Ubuntu PCs that Dell has. I don't know if I'll end up getting a laptop or a PC. Decisions, decisions.

if you don't play modern PC games (and who does these days given that most are console ports or half-baked eastern european efforts or second-tier mmorpgs), get a solid mid-range ($900-$1300) laptop. you won't regret the relative mobility -- i use my T7500/8600M hp laptop more than my mega-desktop by a huge margin.

If you don't game then there are some pretty sweet tiny (like 9") laptops coming out from HP and Dell.  They're in the price range but they probably won't be useful unless you need ultra portability.

Sad.  I notice that one comes up every few months or so though.  It gets better everytime.  Last time it was a 22-inch monitor, this time 24-inch... I had to bite.
