With respect to RE5, I agree Croal that the imagery in the game does indeed have a history that cannot be denied or ignored. I would content to those who say the game is "racist" that the intent of the setting is not to stir controversy, and it's indeed sad that we're even having the discussion. There's also a history with respect to the setting of RE4, yet I don't remember hearing any complaints about a white man killing a bunch of spanish people for instance.
Many Japanese people don't have much personal interaction or experience dealing with people of different races, especially compared to Americans or other nations with mixed populations. What's racially unacceptable or divisive to us may just be something funny they saw on television, or on a jar. With that in mind, I'm not offended. Intent is important in these discussions, and I'm simply not convinced the game is "being racist" or whatever simple explanation Sharpton will give it.
