So what's the deal with Heroes?
« on: April 13, 2008, 09:58:42 PM »
I just bought the first season of it for 20 bucks from Best Buy and I haven't removed the wrapping because I'm looking around to see if I can convince myself that it's any good, if not it's going back.

You may ask "Whoa, wtf you buy it in the first place for?", well it's because I'm interested in the concept, and I'm a fan of comics, and what I've seen looks pretty interesting. So, any Heroes fans in here? What should I expect from this show?

Convince me to start watching this, EB.

IMO, It's pretty good. It took an episode or two to actually get into it. But after that, it's gets a lot better.

You can expect to fall asleep mid season.  It really seems like they had no idea where they were going mid season or how to get there and thought the novelty would carry them until the end of the season, which is pretty decent.  The pacing in this show is absolutely terrible.

That's a massive negative for me. Is the writing/acting really good? I mean, in TV or movies, priorities for my favor go Concept > Acting > Pacing > Writing > Cinematography > Sound

If you want to punish me somehow, just make me watch Episodes 10-18 of Heroes Season 1.  Even Hayden can't carry that garbage on her own.

The acting and writing are pretty decent in the beginning of the season, but then the writing falls off horribly.  You have a few characters that have nothing to do with the main story line for 3/4 of the season while they try to figure out what to do with them.  Then they're shoved in towards the end.  It doesn't seem like they have a long term idea of where the story is going.  It's such a wasted opportunity.  I love the concept, but I don't think they even milk it enoug to keep you entertained with the bad writing.

I'd say it's definitely worth $20.  It does have a lull in the middle of the season, but it also has CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON AKA DR. FRICK'N WHO in there as well.

I enjoyed it as a good ol' fashioned fan service for my nerdliness.  It's people learning that they've got super powers and how that affects their lives.  It's not the most well written, well directed or well acted thing of all time ever or anything, but it will certainly tickle my nerd prostate.

Heroes starts out okay, loses steam towards the middle, and then it picks up for a bit and then it starts sucking again for the finale.  I didn't bother with season 2.

The first season had its up and downs, but I think biggest problem with the show is that it took itself too seriously. Had they injected a bit of humor in the show it would probably be less drab. The best episode comes towards the end of the first season which hinted at big things that never came to pass. In fact that's pretty much what the show is, a middle class whore who never finishes her blowjobs. Lots of alluding but without the grand climax. Still, I found the first season somewhat entertaining to watch.

I assumed that the series was still trying to find its legs and that by the second season they would hit the concept out of the park. Unfortunately I was wrong and the following season had even worse writing than the first. Almost all the characters seemed like they popping way too many of the "stupid pills" to the point where they were walking around like a bunch of depressed zombies. The story became so uninteresting that i still have the last two episodes sitting on my harddrive waiting to be watched.

Maybe they'll get it right the next time.   :-\

I was going to mention this before, but I edited myself because I could not cite specifics (it's been a while since I saw the show).  This problem is sooooo endemic to the show.  It's terrible, terrible writing, and at the time, Heroes lovers defended it as being comic book-y or whatever, but whether it was intentional or not, it was TERRIBLE.  The show seems to want to be a serious drama about comic book crap.  Guess what?  That doesn't work.  Superhero kitsch and camp and trying to be legit drama just does not mix well.

I think it's sort of silly for hardcore fans of this series to think that any kind of writing that takes itself seriously is akin to anything even remotely related to comic books.

The best adaption of comic book camp into movies is Spider-Man, namely the second and third.

I mean, there's stuff like Alan Moore where the writing is serious, but there's like no camp. It's really deep narrative.

There's only two ways to do comic books. If you have average writing skill, do camp. Advanced writing skill? Do the drama-rich writing.

But if this series mixes shitty writing with drama, I'm predicting Bold and Beautiful level bullshit. I hope I'm overestimating.

Also it's a proven theory by myself that all TV shows peak in the third season, if the show makes it that far, maybe it'll turn around.

I think that's one reason why Buffy/Angel worked so well and probably what kept me going through even the worse seasons. Had the show been a straight up melodrama I wouldn't have made it past the first two seasons. But because the character evoked a sense of personality and a humor that acknowledged its campiness, it helped me forgive its poorly choreographed fights and lapse of logic.

The character's are so static and show no personality.  The flash forward episode displays a glimpse of where the characters go, but you don't see any progression of the characters towards that!  It will probably be an automatic change 5 minutes before that because the writers are dumb.  They seriously can't focus on more than one thing at a time.  Character Development?  Stop any interesting storylines!  Interesting storylines?  Stop any character development or only focus on one character at a time.  Everyone else is going to fuck around doing something obscure while they advance one characters storyline.  They don't plan this shit out at all.  All of a sudden they need something to happen in a characters storyline, so they decide to put everyone elses on hold.  They're busy searching for lollipops in the park, or move at a snails pace so they can move this other story forward.  PLAN IT OUT FUCKS

As of end of season 2, there are maybe 4-6 iffy episodes of Lost (the beginning of season 2 is kinda shaky), whereas there are maybe 4-6 good episodes of Heroes, period.

Lost is good stuff.  And EricP, as of the end of season 2, I can still see there being a satisfying ending to the series.  It's not an out-of-control X-Files-esque clusterfuck.

I wasn't big on the concept either, but it is very well done, and it keeps you hooked similar to Alias S1 and 2.  Most of the characters are pretty cool.  My least favorites have been killed off.

Well I mean, I was averted to television series as a whole, because in most cases they suck. With the onslaught of The Office, Arrested Development and all that, I never got into it because all the idea sucked, until I bought House MD. That shit is mindblowing. The first three seasons are some of the most amazing shit I've ever seen. I dunno how the 4th is, waiting for the DVDs, but my god. After that it was Firefly, then Sunny Philly, and now I'm trying Heroes. I tried Arrested Development but I couldn't handle it, the writers can't decide between being genuinely witty or having the comedic capacity of a 9 year old.

Really? I mean...really? The third season was fucking mindblowing. And with Kumar in the 4th season? Don't spoil anything, I'll wait for the DVD, but I have a huge doubt that the 3rd Season of House will ever be topped by any show on TV, ever

I dunno, dude. But before I saw House, the amount of contempt I felt for TV Series' in general could equate to my hate of Matt Damon (He fucking killed Tom Hanks and Vin Diesel that son of a bitch), and afterwards, I fell in love. Trust me when I say that's a huge accomplishment.
