Sherlock Holmes: Where to start?

I recently got a big ol omnibus of all of Doyle's Holmes shit, and I was wondering where to start.  I've already read Hound of the Baskervilles (thanks high school).

I am assuming there is no real continuity, but is it best to read the shiz in chronological order, or should I hew close to the best material?

From what I remember, it's all pretty easy going, so you might as well plow through in chronological order.  Plus you'll be able to see the character change, since Conan Doyle (like most authors) couldn't bring himself to keep writing his main creation as an asshole as the series went on.

How are Doyle's Professor Challenger books?  Are any of those more essential than another?  I'm assuming The Lost World, but beyond that...

My Victorian boner is leading me towards the Sherlock.  Oddly enough, I still refuse to go through Dickens.

Even though the stories are all self-contained, read them in an chronological order so that the little tidbits of background information make more sense.  

There's a point in the story where Holmes goes missing and it'd be kinda odd if you first read the stories that occur after that event.

Sherlock Holmes is great. :)

The radio plays were pretty damn good too. I also have a soft spot in my heart for The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The TV series that started in the 80s. I've got seasons 1 & 2. Good stuff. :)
