Evilbore's Official "Freeware" thread
« on: April 14, 2008, 06:00:11 PM »
seriously, we need a thread where we tell each other awesome free games that we can download on the internet.

This is this thread.

Rockstar, of course, has the first two GTAs on their website. They are fun to pick up and fuck around with on occasion.

So, GO. Post intriguing freeware homebrew indie or whatever games.

Heh, I used to talk to Kayin, the guy who made "I Wanna Be The Guy" a bit on IRC back in the day. He lives pretty close by me but we never hung out.

Anyways, here's a plug for my modern day text-mode graphics RPG, called Kikan. It's pretty fun, has a story dealing with drug addiction, it takes place in a slightly surreal New York City, and has an edm-influenced soundtrack. STRONGLY influenced by Shadow Hearts series. It requires MegaZeux (http://www.digitalmzx.net), a text-mode graphics game creation system, basically a far advanced evolution of ZZT if you're familiar with that.

Plot:
A darker-than-usual night in NYC, a jogger is out running on the Throgs Neck bridge. She happens upon a shocking sight... a car, mangled beyond recognition into a tangled mass of metal, screams coming from the driver's seat. She manages to pull a middle-aged man from the rubble, slightly bruised but still able to move. The man introduces himself as B.D., and pleads with the jogger to not alert the authorities to his presence. The adventurous Yvonne reluctantly agrees to help him out and provide him with a place to rest, but on the way across the bridge to her apartment, B.D. is swamped with strange hallucinations....

Features:
# A dark, mature story about one man's struggle to overcome his drug addiction
# 8-10 hours of classic RPG gameplay
# Judgement Line battle system which introduces an active, timing-based element into traditional turn-based combat
# Classic RPG tropes like status effects, elemental weaknesses, buffs/debuffs, and dialogue trees
# Many unique items to find and spells to learn
# Fun and challenging puzzles
# Unique electronic music soundtrack
# Stylish retro graphics

Website (has a download link and a download link to get MegaZeux):

I fucking love Knytt and Knytt Stories. Its one of those game you can only really play once but the music is just absolutely phenomenal (very moody and atmospheric). Check out "Within a Deep Forest" too (its more of a game game than Knytt).

Fileplanet has offered a free copy of Ground Control for anyone with a Gamespy ID. It's more than a bit aged graphically at this point, but I still think it holds up well to this day. Very fun RTS.

I went to the site, to the download page.  I saw
Quote
This game is big and a fairly large download. Most people don't play past the first few screens. So save my poor system admin some bandwidth and start out with this demo version.
Edit: I don't like this game.

The Turrican remake thingy is pretty damn rad tho.

Aww, did the poor apples hurt you. IWBTG is mainly for people who like their video games hard and prickly. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Then again I'm quite the masochist when it comes to games. You're probably better off playing Knytt which is a softer, more gentle creature.

Edit: Damn you stealth edited your harsh comments. But yeah, Hurrican is a pretty awesome Turrican tribute which rarely gets recognized in freeware threads.
