I normally skip Snuffy Smith, since it is written in hillbilly gibberish, but the Curmudgeon put it up today.  I don't usually read shitty strips unless teh Curmudgeon posts em.

Also, it would be hilariously awesome if Barr or some other Libertopian costs McCain the election.  Like, nipples erect awesome.

Remember when TVC said he was a libertarian.

I basically am.  I just don't want the label because I'm not an idiot screwhead like most Libertarians.  If you wanted to split hairs, my ideal political beliefs would probably skew into some form of anarchism, but it's useless to waste time thinking about impossible ideals.

I'm hoping Paul's campaign will lead to a future candidate that well be received better. Kind of like how barry gold water paved the way for Reagan.

Goldwater won the Republican nomination in 1964, while Ron Paul wasn't even a legitimate contender. It's hard to imagine that the Republican party would be influenced by someone who couldn't get any votes. Anyway, the Republican party didn't really become that libertarian after Goldwater.

How was Ron Paul not a legitimate contender? Remember Giuliani? Ron Paul got more votes and more delegates than him and he was supposed to be the nominee. Clearly something is going on.

There were candidates similar to Rudy who monopolized his votes. If they weren't there, the votes wouldn't have gone to Paul. If it was a head to head match up between Rudy and Paul, who do you think would win the Republican nomination?

And though Paul did well in the caucuses, he performed poorly in the primaries. He had no chance! Because of this he can't have much of an influence on the rest of the party. By getting less than ten percent of the votes, Paul showed the party that there isn't a strong enough appetite within the party for his brand of libertarianism.

I doubt it.  I personally think that it will take the GOP 6-8 years of futility and loss to actually shift their platform towards the middle, and it will be more in the direction of McCain than Paul.  IMO if McCain was running in any other year, against any other candidate than Obama and didn't have the Bush Presidency hanging onto him like an albatross, he would win.  A majority of the country probably would go for a more "moderate" conservative platform that McCain would run on if the party wasn't dragging him to the right at every opportunity.  Then, after he gets thumped in the general the far right wingnuts can scream "See?  We told you tacking to the middle would be a disaster!" and continue to make the GOP even more irrelevant, which is awesome for socialist wingnuts like me.  It'll take them until about 2014 or 2016 to wise up and adopt a more moderate platform and become relevant again.

Or maybe they'll die, like the Whigs.  That would be the most awesome outcome possible, if the GOP were to split into separate factions:  gun nuts that hate the federal government, far right religious distinguished mentally-challenged fellows and rich people.

It's going to be close - I don't see McCain or Obama winning in a landslide. But I do think that people who write off McCain are mistaken. For some reason many Americans are under the disillusion that McCain is still the "maverick" of 2000, as if the last four years never happened. He'll do well with independents and hispanics, which is something that wouldn't happen for the more extreme candidates like Romney and Rudy.

I write in Rosa Luxemburg for every election

I hope Barr gets some real leverage, and sucks all the "uncomfortable with US foreign policy, but too socially reactionary/racist to stomach Obama" votes away from McCain.  That could have a substantial effect.

What makes you think that Obama will win? I get all these Repubs at work trying to convince me that neither Obama or Hillary has a shot in hell against McCain due to the "silent majority" middle-America whitebread Republicans. I personally think Hillary would lose against McCain pretty bad, due to all the hardcore Repubs flocking to the voting booth on Election Day to do anything in their power to prevent her from getting in. But Obama may... hopefully... have a shot.

81% of America says we're on the wrong track.  McCain = same old shit, old and busted.  Obama = at least a chance for a new way, the new hottness.  I do agree that McSame would beat Shrillary, but she's not gonna be the nominee so no need to worry about that.

I'm more of an Obama supporter by default... I agreed with Kucinich, Dodd and Edwards on the issues more.  Basically I wanted anyone except Hillary to come out of the primaries with the nomination and then I could hold my nose and vote for a Democrat for the first time since 1996, when I was young, dumb and excited to vote for Bubba.

While I do agree that the hive mind of Obama's internets supporters is tiresome, what is even more inexplicable to me is how anyone could be genuinely excited at the prospect of a Hillary Clinton Presidency, other than old white women and people who will benefit from her in the White House.  (Faux News folks, the DLC crowd, etc)

I highly doubt most of them are genuinely excited about her being POTUS.  A bunch of them are voting for her name, or because it'll mean Bill is back in the White House, or because they're closet racists or whatever.  Only the old women like my mother are all "You go girl!  Break that glass ceiling!", all the while failing to notice that that shrill harpy cuntburger stopped being human, much less a woman, years and years ago.
