I got them all in Sonic 2 because it was really easy. Those faux-3D bonus levels posed no challenge to my mad skilz. When S&K came out, and playing as Knuckles let you keep all your rings after bonus levels, I could get all the emeralds in like 15 minutes.

I dunno, I just never bothered. I'd rather run through and play the game than grapple with some nightmarish spinning cage. And in S2 I didn't really want to stop running through the stage just because I ran through a post.
