My grandfather is dying
« on: November 06, 2006, 10:19:28 PM »
My grandfather has lung cancer. He was taking chemo, it didn't help him so the doctor is taking him off of it and placing him under hospice care. I don't feel anything about that at all, although I do feel sad about it, I haven't cried one bit. I'm more worried about my mom, who's taking the whole thing really hard. My grandfather's condition is worsening, recently he's started to cough up blood.

I am ashamed to admit that I really do not know my grandfather well. Growing up, he was the guy who gave me 50 dollars if I did well in school. We never really had a conversation or a real relationship. I'm kinda feeling like I should make up for lost time before it's too late.

Even after all of this I really don't feel a thing. I feel guilty because of it.

I'm sorry, dude.   :-\

Don't feel guilty.  You don't know him and that's not your fault.  I would try to spend what time you can together if it really bothers you though.  That's not something you want to let bug you for the rest of your life.  I love you and call me some time.  :(

I'm just joking when I tease you on the forum.  I still love you.  You're my buddy.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. I think they go to special heaven cause some of them are just so nice.

Sorry to hear that dude. But don't feel guilty. It sounds like it wasn't your fault and there's something else to the story.

Just keep watch over your mom and help her

Something else to the story? He got Lung Cancer from smoking cigs. I simply to not feel sympathy for people who get cancer that way unless it was from second hand smoke or something they did to cause it. Even for my own family.

No, I'm talking about the relationship. It sounds like you weren't that close to him growing up..?

That explains. I was always around my grandparents as a kid, and I've got so many memories of them.

Like I remember when my uncle would bring me to my grandma's house. Before he let me in the door, he'd tell me to be good because my grandma had a black belt in karate. I was scared shitless and believed him for like 5 years :lol

I need to make a thread about that shit

My grandmother was a teacher, so I'd go over their house during the holidays or summer break. We'd go to the zoo, the children's museum, and just have fun. I love my grandmother with all my heart but..my grandfather, I haven't really ever done a thing with him my entire life, aside from help him at work.

All I remember about my grandpa is that I used to chill in his room and he would always give me a fresh pack of gum every time I hung out with him. Oh, and he never finished a single drink (always left like 3 cm of liquid on the bottom of the glass). :-\

My grandfather died of lung cancer a couple of years ago. I felt bad, not because he died...but because I didn't really feel any remorse.

I agree with you. I'm sorry about your grandfather, but more so for your mom. There's no reason for you to try to force yourself to feel remorse or anything. It's terrible to say, but he brought it on himself, it's not like this is a random tragedy that no one saw coming.  :-X

Lung cancer is pretty brutal.  My uncle died from it last summer.

It doesn't take long and it isn't pretty.  My condolences.

The chemo really makes them lose energy.  My grandfather had lung cancer and died about 2 years ago.  He knew he had it for 2 years but didn't really care and then it got too late.  He was completely normal until he had gotten chemo and he became really tired.  I think he died a week after he left to die in Iran.  He'll still be alive for a while but a much worse death would be my cousin's grandfather's who had a minor stroke that didn't really affect him but then doctor's fucked up giving him a pacemaker by trying too many times to put one in and that made him get a much bigger stroke and become a vegetable for months being fed on a machine.  Really aweful way to die.
