I will sleep easy tonight, knowing I've never bought or downloaded music from either artist.

Fergie era Black Eyed Peas has to be a strong contender.

funny that I just saw GG Allin referenced for the first time earlier today on another site.  synchronicity.  anyway, wikipedia sez:

Quote
Allin was born Jesus Christ Allin at Weeks' Memorial Hospital, in Lancaster, New Hampshire.[4] He was given this messianic name because his father, Merle Allin, Sr. (a religious and antisocial man), then 32 years old, had told his wife, Arleta Gunther, then 21 years old, that an angel had visited him and told him that his newborn son would be a great man in the vein of the Messiah.[5] [6] As a young child, his older brother, Merle Allin, Jr., was unable to pronounce "Jesus" properly and kept calling him "Jeje", which became "GG". The family lived in a log cabin with no water or electricity.

this is way too perfect a punk-rock origin story to possibly be true.  I call bullshit.

but the basic principle, in any case, is that blatantly offensive stuff is less offensive than insidiously offensive stuff

Somebody once told me
The world's was gonna roll me,
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed.
Well she was lookin' kinda dumb
With her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an L on her forehead...

Well the years start comin'
And they don't stop comin',
Back to the rules and I hit the ground runnin'.
Didn't make sense not to live for fun,
Your brain gets smart, but your head gets dumb.
So much to do so much to see,
So what's wrong with takin the backstreets.
You'll never know if you don't go,
You'll never shine if you don't glow...

Hey now, you're an allstar,
Get your game on go play.
Hey now your a rockstar get your show on,
Get paid. (all that glitters is gold)
Only shooting stars break the mold.

It's a cool place
And they say it gets colder,
You're bundled up now, wait till' ya get older.
But the media man makes the differ'
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture.
The ice we skate is gettin pretty thin,
The water's gettin' warm
So you might as well swim.
My world's on fire, how 'bout yours?
That's the way I like it cause I'lll never get bored...

(Music in between verses...)

Hey now your an allstar
Get your game on, go play
Hey now your a rockstar,
Get your show on get paid. (all that glitters is gold)
Only shooting stars...

Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas
I need to get myself away from this place.
I said yep, whatta' concept,
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change...

Well, the years start comin'
And they don't stop comin'.
Back to the rules and I hit the ground runnin',
It didn't make sense not to live for fun,
Your brain gets smart, but your head gets dumb,
So much to do,
So much to see,
So what's wrong with takin' the backstreets?
You'll never know if you don't go(GO! ),
You'll never shine if you don't glow...

Hey now your an allstar
Get your game on, go play
Hey now your a rockstar,
Get your show on get paid (all that glitters is gold)
Only shooting stars break the mold

(and all that glitter is gold)
Only shooting stars break the mold...

When I was like 15 and I'd go to the Bally's Total Fitness down the street, I'd always sing that song to myself in its entirety 3 times when I was running track because I knew it was ~10 minutes at that point.

Hmmm.  In that case, I nominate the entire genre of modern pop country.

Remember all the old jokes about how country-western songs were a litany of bad things happening to the singer?  Wife walks out, dog dies, truck repossessed, etc.

Now it's all about celebrating American suburban culture, except for sometimes when it puts a boot in some swarthy asses.  Surely it's bourgeois enough to irk tennin.

oh yeah.  I'm not really subjected to much pop country these days, but I used to be at dentist's offices and such.

The single most fingernails-on-chalkboard song I've ever heard has got to be "Roll to Me" by Del Amitri  which was played incessantly at my orthodontist from 1997-9.  How could something this blatantly obnoxious ever have become popular?  Shouldn't women hate this shit?

I don't know what song, but it would probably be some shitty indie band's song.  The audio equivalent of a movie like "elephant."

Smash Mouth knew it was a pop band.  I have no problem liking them.
