Byrne + Eno

Quote
As Drowned in Sound noted today, David Byrne announced this week that his long-rumored return to the studio with Brian Eno is nearly complete:

The dream art-rock team of David Byrne and Brian Eno will return with new, strange fruit soon, the former Talking Heads man told NME.com recently.

Speaking at an event in New York, Byrne revealed that the duo had rekindled the relationship they formed in the late 70s/early 80s which resulted in three Talking Heads records and 1981’s classic My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

“I’m finishing up a record with Brian Eno, a musician that I worked with 30 years ago,” Byrne said following an appearance with Paul Simon at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on the 9th of April. “We did a record together of songs, and that’ll come out.”

The NY Daily News adds:

Byrne told us he’s collaborating with their mutual friend Brian Eno “for the first time in 20 years. Brian had written a lot of music, but needed some words, which I know how to do. What’s it sound like? Electronic gospel. That’s all I’m saying.”

Sources say the album will likely be released via Nonesuch, before the end of the year.

In the meantime, David Byrne’s booking agent at William Morris Agency, Mark Geiger, has been soliciting offers from a number of different promoters around the United States for Byrne/Eno live shows, promising the set list will consist of at least 40% Eno-era Talking Heads material. Most of the tour is already booked.

Not a huge fan of Bush of Ghosts, hopefully this will be better.

but I'll gladly pay the $50 they'll charge for a ticket to that show.

I adore Bush of Ghosts.  What has me somewhat worried is Eno's direction as of late.  And his questionable taste (see bud's post).  In any case, that show is guaranteed fuck amazing.

I've really been enjoying the soundtrack to Glitterbug which popped up on the internet a few months ago.

Perhaps I need to give it more of a chance.  I've got a friend who lives nearby so I'm definitely going to be trying to catch this show.

I'm not crazy about My Life in the Bush of Ghosts but their Talking Heads collaborations are awesome.
And I adore Eno's pop stuff (quite like the ambient too for that matter).

The one MP3 released so far seems pretty good to me.

I hate to put it like this, but it seems most accurate: it reminds me a lot of Paul Simon's last Eno-produced album.  Not that it's as bad as that particular album, it isn't (few albums are), but it's awfully boring, particularly for a collab between two of the all-time great pop craftsmen, and carries a similarly dull aesthetic.  A few decent tracks, even fewer that live up to the promise of the lead off single, Strange Overtones (which I still think is fantastic), and nothing that suggests the former glory of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

Maybe I was a little too hyped for it; as of right now, color me a shade of disappointment.  It might strike me differently in a few days.

I'll admit to liking Simon's earlier solo, folk-ier stuff and some of his lightly-produced S&G tunes, but that's all.  I don't care for Graceland one bit.

The album is kinda meh unfortunately, though there are a few good tracks (particularly the initially released song).  There are some cool noises and sections sprinkled throughout but  :-\   I can't escape the feeling that it sounds like something my mom would like (in a bad way)... parts of it are just too clean and straightforward, particularly the rhythm section.  I do get my mom to listen to some good shit sometimes, but you get the idea.

I'm still looking forward to seeing this show.  I'm not sure how many other chances I'll get to see Byrne do Crosseyed and Painless live (which I hope happens).

I'm giving it another listen now... there are definitely moments that grab me.  The kinda chimey part in "My Big Nurse" is great.
It's not much worse than my expectations, but this album definitely coulda been better  :'(
