I acquired Frances the Mute last night, as well as Muse's Absolution; I started listening to Frances around 1AM and fell asleep shortly after, mainly because I was tired from studying. Now I'm listening to it at full mental capacity and I like what I've heard so far

BUT

Why the hell does every song have to end with 5 minutes of unnecessary NOISE. Even as a Pink Floyd fan this is baffling to me. Echoes is like 20min long for instance but never resorts to the type of random noises these guys start playing at the end of their stuff. Ok, I am listening to a song titled "Miranda that Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore" (for whatever reason...I can rarely decipher this man's voice). The song is 13 minutes long but that last 4 minutes consists of a trumpet randomly playing out of tune, some wind, and some faint crooning.

I haven't come across a bad song yet but jeez, these guys need a producer who can sit them down and beat this shit out of them

Tool fans may be interested in the philosophical intent of Viginti Tres, but it just sounds like some fucking wind to ME :punch

Because they're pretentious wankers.

Apparently so. I mean, each person on this album clearly is a master of his instrument...but often it doesn't seem to blend together well. Perhaps too ambitious I suppose, definitely not enough reason or order. Which is what a good producer could help with.

Frances the Mute is terrible.  De-Loused in the Comatorium does basically everything the band was formed to do and to a degree that they haven't been able to surpass since.

At the Drive-In are superior in every manner.  Pick up Relationship of Command.

I really only enjoy Inertiatic ESP.  Awesome song.

But unfortunately, the Mars Volta are godawful.  One good song can't save them.

Dunno, I like The Widow and uh, the spanish song. And the first song on this album; spelling out the names to these songs is too much of a chore

Scrap that shit album and grab one of the other, more song-oriented ones.

Radiohead has weird songtitles too. It just feels too forced when you actively choose weird word combinations. Douchebag extravagant.

typical Radiohead songtitles:

- Walking with Boxing Gloves in a Factory
- How in the Moon Argpehstu
- Plants on the Ceiling (With No Engine)

You must have picked a non-representative song.  I'm not a fan of anything but their first album, but they are basically the opposite of girly.  They are obsessed with excess.  Lots of guitars, lots of vocals, lots of effects, lots of production, lots of loudness, lots of screaming.  They try to do the Floydian space jam thing mixed with post-hardcore sensibilities, and it just comes out a mess.

I still give their first album (and EP) a pass.  Everything else has been a mess.  ATDI is one of my favorite acts of the 90s-00s, though.

Lol, the mars volta isn't a band that you can judge off a single.  Although I admit I'm embarrassed now for having liked Frances the Mute back when it came out.  I blame weed and Robitussin.

I really really liked the Tremulant EP (pre-Deloused), but I was kinda let down by Deloused when it came out.  While Tremulant was indicative of what the album would sound like, I think running time was a factor in my initial disappointment.  The EP was like 20 minutes, and very satisfying, whereas the album was like an hour long, wearing out its welcome.  Plus, the previously silly lyrics took a dive into the silly deep end.

I can't make it through anything they've done since the first album.  The first album is definitely indulgent, but everything they've released since redefines what indulgent is.  Deloused, it at least seems like they were trying to make a refined, well-done, prog-influenced album.  Everything since then has felt like the album making process was pressing the record button, playing impromptu for 70 minutes, and then adding UFO sound effects afterwards.  The first album seemed like it took work.  The other albums just seem like jam sessions of people that think they don't have to bother actually crafting their songs.

Yea this is really indulgant to say the least. Sometimes it works - I like L'Via L'Viaquez, Cygus...Vismund Cygnus (wtf lol), uh The Widow, and most of Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore

....

but then this 30 minute song just ruins everything. It's broken down into segments but jeez, what the fuck. Mars Volta is the musical equilivent of Peter Jackson in the editing room

Have you listened to ATDI at all?  I'd suggest checking out Relationship of Command and Vaya if you already haven't.

Nope, I've never heard ATDI. Might as well check them out.

Hm Rick Rubin produced De-Loused? Now I'm really interested in seeing how it differs from Frances

I really like Deloused, and then just parts of songs on their past two albums. I think I like one song on...umm...whatever the fuck the name of their last album was.

I went back and listened to ATDI and really didn't dig them at all. I just don't like that vocal style.

BTW, fuck you PD.

Pretty rad.

I haven't listened to Sparta ever, are they any good?  Figure they're a bit more...conventional than the Mars Volta is.
