Once Upon a Time in Mexico: What a self-indulgent mess!

The concept could've been really, really great.  And in the middle of a totally convoluted, bloated plot is definitely the potential for a great action/espionage flick if tightly written.  Robert Rodriguez ran totally unchecked and the result is ridiculous.  What a waste of talent and potential, in my opinion.

I wanted to love it.  I would've had more fun if it was bit more coherent.  It really didn't know what kind of movie it wanted to be.  Rodriguez is full of good ideas, but his execution is usually so awful because he can never reign it in.  He loves his "freedom", though.

YES!

I'm easily one of the most lenient people here in terms of pop trash, but this is like watching a filmmaker with a shotgun in terms of execution.  The film is barely coherent.  There are so many plot threads going on that it becomes a joke.

Especially when judged against previous installments in the same universe, this comes off as just sloppy.

the johnny depp character is what makes the whole film

in the commentary he had joked with Depp about doing a whole series.

i would so sit and watch that day one.  everytime.

they are utterly unique in the field of blockbuster cinema.

each film builds upon the world before it with a Boy's Own sensibility and a grandiose reaching attempt to forge a new mythology culled from wild fever dreams that combines themes of love lost and devotion to duty (at the expense of ones own desires) while also throwing so much eye candy at the viewer that it becomes overwhelming.

All those things you said get nullified by the presence of Johnny Crap

i was disappointed with my first viewing of The Third Film but in later viewings it's because they don't do what I expected them to do, which shouldn't really come as a surprise as the first two didn't either.

At World's End is boring!  Johnny Depp's character in Once Upon a Time in Mexico is great, but he's hardly the main character and even his arc is sloppy.  Sloppy writing.

I've liked the Pirates Trilogy more and more with repeated viewings.  AWE's problems never disappear, but when you know what to expect, they don't tear down the film as much as I originally thought (or what Eric P said).   In spite of the trashy pacing and convoluted storytelling, I think I ultimately like it more than Dead Man's Chest.
