I was looking forward to them too, I really like ExciteTruck.

Maybe I'll try them again when I learn the tracks.

BTW, 'strategic' item setting owns all haters.

My gf really likes the bikes, but I haven't tried them.


More observations:

-DO NOT HIT WALLS
-Don't hit enemies either
-DO turn items on Strategic, it's a godsend
-Jaggies are not so good in HD
-It seems like using most of the trick jumps is slower than just taking a good turn
-I've only done the first two cups but almost all the tracks are AAA, unlike other MKs that are boring in the beginning.
-Haven't tried the leaderboards and stuff but it's supposed to be excellent
-No 4p single-box online, eat it hamlin
-The drifting isn't dumbed down, it's better. If you want red sparks you need to have a well-planned racing line instead of just jamming your thumb back and forth constantly
-even with standard item distribution it's not as slanted as it once was - you can get mushrooms and red shells in first place again.

I just got the game too, and it's the first Mario Kart that I've enjoyed since Super Circuit.

How do you do tricks? ???

Go up one of the ramps with the little blue boost borders, it happens automatically. You get more of a boost the more perpendicular your approach is, but it always seems to result in lost time.

I don't know yet if I like it more than DS, but it's certainly the best console version since SMK. It's a shame they totally fucked up Battle Mode, they did a LOT right.

It's teams only, and points only. No FFA last man standing.

No item selection in GP, but I imagine if you do single play Versus you can tweak everything.,

For reference, here's my preferences:

-MKDS
-MKW (only played first 2 cups in Wii and Retro)
-MK:SC
-MK64
-MKDD

The tracks are way more imaginative than DD and the gameplay just feels better. Plus the item turn-down.

I've only played SMK on emulator, and not fully, so I can't really rank it. Though I played all its tracks to death on SC.

Star Cup continues the awesomeness. The first track is a standard circuit, but it feels like a real go kart track. Lots of tight turns and a thin track. In fact, all of the tracks are pretty thin in this game, even in Mushroom Cup most of the time you couldn't fit more than 3 karts abreast.

Second track of Star cup is a fuck awesome stage with a thin river, you get a speed boost from the river but you have to actually focus and steer in order to stay in it.

Just finished all of 50cc, and I just tried one track in 100cc on a bike (which is hella fun). This is shaping up to be my favorite console Mario Kart. :hyper

Excitetruck got boring on a rental. So overrated. I was gonna skip on MKW since the press on it is mixed but you guys don't seem that down on it. Maybe I'll give it a shot further down the road, my current backlog is enough to keep me occupied for a while.

I've played all the courses now, all the new ones are great. I'll give motion another shot later tonight I think as a handicap vs my g/f. I'll try online tomorrow maybe and give you guys the rundown.

I did not like the controls on Excite Truck (too easy to overcompensate and go careening all over the place, not to mention there were times in ET I had trouble following the track), but the motion controls + wheel work really well in Mario Kart Wii. I'll have to say I'm pretty impressed, I did not think they would have been able to pull it off and I would have gone to either the Gamecube or Classic Controller. This game is really fun so far though.

My friend bought it last night and we played 3 player multiplayer for an hour and a half.  Controls quickly felt natural to me (just using a wiimote without the wheel) and I had a lot of fun.  Really dominated the cpu racers and my friends.  The graphics are fucking terrible, though.

I was someone who was worried that the wheel would be manditory.  I played for 5 hours yesterday and haven't NOT used the wheel yet.  I love it, but I can see I'll probably need the added control for 150.  I was surprised at how well the wheel actually did work, the weight of the item is nearly perfect.  The game is fuck awesome, can't wait to get online.

For controller, up on the dpad as soon as you lift off from any jump. For the Wii Wheel, whip the wheel up, which works half the time.

Wheelies also require tilting it up, which is a stupid idea when you hold it upright anyway. ET this is not. I thought bikes would be more tailor-made for the wheel but they're even worse.

Disables all the power items. The best item you can get is triple mushroom.

The only thing that sucks about it is red shells become pretty rare, and I don't feel that they're a power item.

Wow, Mirror Mode is an abomination. I got through 150cc without frustration but I've tried two different cups, 2 races and 3 races, and been anally raped halfway through the third lap in each.

What garbage. And if I want more characters and karts I have no choice but to continue this shit. No downloadable save states allowed.

What I said about Mirror Mode.  The item abuse on this mode is far worse than anything I saw on the DS version and that is saying a lot.

Mario Kart Wii is merely a good game.  Is it Game of the Forever or whatever shortbus phrase GAF has latched on to?  Hardly.  I think it is vastly inferior to the DS version in virtually every way:

-The track designs are much better in the DS version, where as the Wii version seems like tracks that didn't make the cut in the DS version but were considered good enough anyway.

- Snaking abuse is gone but in its place, item abuse is so rampant that the game will decide what position you are going to be in through items.  If you're in 9th place and there is about 10 seconds left to race, if the CPU decides they want to keep you back, they will give you a green shell or a banana and hope that you miracle your ass to beat a few others to the finish line.  If you're 1st and the game wants you in 3rd, they will just nail you with enough blue and red shells until they make it happen.

- The unlockable cart characters are stupid as fuck.  Why do they have Baby Daisy when they should have brought back the Koopa Kids?  I did like Dry Bowser though.  The extra vehicles they give range from total shit to mediocre, not enough to impact gameplay considerably.  If you get too far ahead, there's always a few blue shells that would neutralize whatever advantage a Honeycoupe might have over a Standard Kart.

I did finish all cup races with Golds and at least a Star rating (often times 2 Stars) but I don't have enough interest to get through the Time Trials to unlock the remainding karts, bikes, and characters.  The online aspects of the game are acceptable enough but dropped connections are somewhat frequent.  At least I can connect online, unlike SSB Brawl where in the two months of ownership, I've never been able to make a successful connection.

The only question is what is next on tap for Wii.  Doesn't look like much for several months.

I think the three other modes all have less abuse than the DS game though so it balances out.

I really like the tracks in Wii. DS had great ones too, this isn't a replacement, but I don't think I can call it worse.

That item abuse only happens in Mirror mode, the other GPs are fun and you can turn off power items in Versus.

I'm so absolutely sick of Nintendo's spinoff characters though. Make some new fucking games or start throwing in guys like Monty Mole and shit. I don't want Rare rejects and mini-versions of characters I already hate. I also don't see how Waluigi and Rosalina are heavyweights.

Yea, this is my last Wii buy of '08 it seems.
