The triumph of Third is that it sounds exactly like Portishead and nothing like trip-hop. This is the late-night, beat-driven, torpid-languid music of a zillion coffee shops, sure, but with the blood drained out of it, a creepy-crawly, black-and-white-sounding thing that gets under the skin and stays there from the first play.

Commence fapping.  I think this is the second 2008 album guaranteed to be on this year's top ten.  The first being Boris's Smile.

My first exposure to Portishead was their SNL appearance ("Only You"). I was coming down off a long 48 hours of drugs and drinking, so I was in a wierd place. But halfway through the song, I am completely welling up and just in awe. It was just perfect ..

So, I ran out the next day and bought both albums. I will pick up this one too .. not sure if it will still resonate with me like it did 10 years ago.

i picked this up at B&N this weekend and so far i'm really digging it.  but i can't say it's my favorite portishead album.  i really miss the hard hitting drums of the previous albums. 

the new sound is definitely more ambient and ethereal.  which is nice, but it's missing the HOP in the TRIP.  i need a few more rotations to make my final call though.  i really dug the previous ones due to the hiphop influence but it seems they went a bit off course this time around.  i'm all for experimenting though so i can appreciate the album for what it is.

...the drums though.  where are they?
