Does networking scare you?
« on: April 29, 2008, 06:43:46 AM »
As in "computer networking".  If business networking or social networking scares you, well, feel free to post about it.

Computer networking totally and utterly bamboozles me.

[boring story]
The phone line port on my wireless modem/router got fried in an electrical storm.  So I ordered a replacement.  Stupid me though, I ordered the wired version of the modem by accident.  But I need wireless because the ethernet port on my computer got fried ages ago.  So I read up online and found that if I put the new modem in bridge mode and disable its DHCP function, it will become invisible and pass the signal straight through as such.  Then I can plug my existing wireless modem/router into it via ethernet and everything should be fine.

Well that didn't work.  But what did work was having the exact same settings on both modems (DHCP on, PPOe mode on, neither in bridged mode, both have my login details).  It works, and I have NO idea why.
[/boring story]

My approach to computer networking always seems "poke things until it magically works and then stop poking".  I wish I understood all this stuff better.  Anyone else feel the same or are you all networking geniuses?

Let me get this straight your new modem/router is connected to the internet while your old one is connected to your computer wirelessly. So basically you'll need to setup your ISP/ADSL information on only your new wired router and make it as a bridge. This way it only acts as a modem and not a router. Your old router will need to point the new router as a gateway for IP traffic. Then connect your PC using the old routers IP address as it's gateway.

Thanks Fresh Prince.  Now that it's working, I'm not touching it!  But I'm bookmarking this thread in case my wonky setup stops working...

So you're saying I'd get laid more often if it weren't for my lackluster networking skills?  I like that excuse - it's way better than anything I can come up with.

Eh, glad its working. Was going to suggest, if that didnt work, to call your isp and verify that they didnt do mac enforcement. (Seems like your ISP doesnt, tsk tsk).

Edit: NM, apparantly your ISP does PPPoE/PPPoA.
