NEWS FROM MIDNITE: THE BREAKDOWN OF GTA IV AT LAUNCH

My store had approximately 200 people in line (why do people bring friends/family to events like this?). Sold 133 units.  32 strategy guides.  2-to-1 sales for Xbox 360 in comparison to PlayStation 3.  Somebody mentioned 630p.  Full police presence (four cruisers total).

Some crazies really came out tonight.  Guy spat on another guy for getting the Xbox 360 version.  One dude threw a fit when we started to hand out games to folks who already pre-purchased the game and he had to wait (we got everyone who already went through the register their game in less than fifteen minutes!).

Rockstar also sent out a rep to give folks in lines t-shirts, posters, stickers and free swag.  Took a bunch of pictures, since I gather we were a pretty big event.

A little bit bigger than Halo 3.  Doesn't feel as "hyped" as that release, though.

EDIT: Also, I served every single walk-up customer that came.  Either copy.  Didn't matter.  They got it.  Except Special Editions, which I offered to sell off after 48 hours.  Take that, losers!

I picked up my copy this morning and couldn't help but chuckle at the irony: People got SUPER pissed at some guy who cut the line. But here we are wiating to plunk down good money to act like a psychopath in a fictional version of our city, and we're mad at the guy who cuts the line?

Most everyone was cool, except the Army recruiter by the front door who was obviously annoyed because none of the thugs in line wanted to talk to him about serving their country.

Considering that I've had to call the fuzz the past two Sunday for distinguished mentally-challenged customer issues and my store's proximity to Oakland, the fact that a guy spat on another guy was actually considered a relative success with all the people we had.  I was worried more or less about folks getting really hurt.

Wow, you're stupid.  Poor people buy things outside their means all the time.  Who needs clothes for their kids?  Buy a PS3!  I'm not kidding - I saw a guy and his wife bring their kid in a baby stroller once, and after he bought a PS3, he demanded the wife take the kid out of the baby stroller (forcing her to carry the kid) and he put the PS3 in it.

Anyone under the age of seventeen must be accompanied by and have the consent of a parent or legal guardian with valid state identification to purchase a M-rated game.

It's the real reason why while the midnight launch is a big money maker - today will be huge.  The tykes that want their copy will bring their mom and pop to the store.

My store was nuts.   The EB employees actually held a bonfire with the PS3 copies, proclaiming that 630p is too much of a disgrace to sell to anyone.
