Its fun Sandbox gameplay. From what I've experience so far, Niko as the main character is way more interesting than any GTA character thats been.

The biggest letdown for me is the visuals. I would have wanted a more clean look instead of the fuzzy look the game has now.

Yeah, my main grievance with the entire series and why I haven't finished a single Grand Theft Auto game is the lack of a decent character to play as.  Who wants to play as a narcissistic criminal deviant assholes with dumb plots?  This one is engaging.

You really do have to unlearn what you have learned in terms of vehicle gameplay - it's awful.  I've got the hang of it, though.  And I second Blue's gripes about the "fuzzy" look.  The 360 looks a little sharper than the PS3 version, but neither are really what I want from a next-gen game.

I mostly like it.  So far, I like the characters and story more than any previous GTA games, even if everyone has some sort of obnoxious accent or another.  I expected the visuals to be shit, so my one letdown remains the shitty vehicle controls.  Nobody does teh funny in games like Rockstar.

I'm digging the dialogue very much, I love the banter between Niko and Vlad. Also with Niko, I like the fact that he isn't inept like GTA:SA's protaganist. Theres a quiet confidence about him.

Facial expressions add to the characters in this game too. Rockstar did great with that (even though the skin for mostly all the characters in the game look like doo doo)

Yeah, if you're on the fence I think a rental is definitely in order.  While some of the ridiculous inconveniences of the previous games have been rectified, the major problems still remain.  Melee combat is shit (perhaps even worse than it was in GTA3/VC, since every attack has a long recoil/recovery animation).  Gunplay is shit.  Vehicle handling is shit.  At the end of the day it does kinda feel like GTA 3.5 in high definition.  Rockstar pretty much ignored all the major complaints about the series, and just set about re-doing everything in high-definition.  Even then it still has the clunky, chuggy feel of the previous last-generation games.

The new GPS/navigation system is both an improvement and a detriment.  While it's always easy to find your destination, you're constantly staring at the minimap to find your way around.  You never "learn" the city, and it feels like a very elaborate game of Pac-Man.

I'm 4-5 hours in and I'm still kinda waiting for the fun to start.  But at the same time, it's got Ricky Gervais!  And I heard a Sisters of Mercy song on the classic rock station!

Why don't you like the gunplay?  I have to admit that I haven't gotten into a serious shootout (just a handful of small mission ones), but the system seems to work pretty well.

Yeah, I think you're a bit deluded if you think the shooting isn't a ton better.  I really have dug the new sytem so far.

I do agree with the popular sentiment that the vehicles drive like poop and the melee system is too slow.

People seem to justify the driving by saying it's more realistic or whatever.  If the game wanted to get serious points for being more realistic, why didn't they make running stoplights something that makes the cops pull you over.  Before we get to "realistic" controlling vehicles, how about we make the behavior of the pigs make sense first?

At best it seems like the shooting is functional, but not very fun.  You can get the job done when you need to, but it's not particularly engaging.  Perhaps it's unfair of me to call the gun combat "shit", since it at least works.  But much like driving, it seems like more of a chore than anything else.  Auto-target, blast a few rounds, flick-target to next dude, blast a few rounds, flick-target to other dude, shoot him until he dies, etc, etc.  When you tried to auto-target in previous games it felt like a total crapshoot as to whether the targeting would work or whether you would target the guy you meant to -- that's been fixed, but there's still nothing really visceral or exciting about a shootout.  It's just like gunning down sacks of potatoes.

Maybe the problem is that I haven't gotten access to any of the heavy weapons yet, I dunno.  Right now I just have an SMG and a standard handgun.

Have you played Mafia?  The cops in that game are nit-picky as fuck about shit like red lights and speed limits.  I guess you can give it points for realism, but it's not very fun.

I just played a huge ass shootout, the shooting is better than previous games, works fine, but it's like diet Gears of War.  Diving or some other evasive stuff could've made it much more fun...

no way.  I would still be stuck on the first mission.  Having cops get on you for hitting their cars or people is good enough.  Anything more and it would just be a huge hindrance. Realistic driving times to get across the map would be absolutely ridiculous.  you'd spend most of your time stuck in city traffic.

and I don't understand how cop behavior and people sucking at the driving controls is related, but w/e...

I don't think that makes much sense...why would realism in one aspect of a game require realism in unrelated aspects of the game, especially in parts where realism would hurt it?  but anyway, I'm really done arguing with people about GTA on this board.  edit: I mean that in the nicest way possible--i'm probably just annoying people at this point. :lol

The thing with GTA games is that the whole "Horse and Carrot" reward system that should be there isn't. You get money from various missions but its mostly there to have you do stuff and progress the story a bit.

Free aim is definitely better. The problem with cover is that it's so slow and clunky to move around with it. In one of the first missions in the time it took me to remove myself from cover and get into the room with the drug dealers the guy I was with was dead. The next time I did it without cover and it was fine.

Then let's stick to this - if the vehicle control is supposed to be 'realistic' then why is it possible to fly 20 feet in the air over a speed bump or cresting a hill, and why does every car understeer even though many of them are obviously RWD?

The gunplay is awesome and getting drunk in the game is awesome

And if you drive drunk in front of a cop, they'll bust you.  Which seemed strange.  Why only when I'm drunk?  I tried to evade them by running into the cabaret with Roman and we both got busted midshow by the police.

Compared to which other next-gen games?

You can't expect them to best linear, closed-in action games.  Next to other open world games, however, I'd say this is one of the best looking.  Easily.  It's much better looking overall than stuff like Saint's Row, Crackdown, and other such games.  It's a match for stuff like Assassin's Creed as well.  It's a bit rough in places, but overall very nice.  You can't expect Uncharted or Gears quality visuals in a game of this size, you know.

assassin's creed looks pretty damn impressive compared to GTA4.  and in some instances, especially framerate and anti-aliasing, crackdown looks very sexy.

GTA4 looks muddy and too high contrasty for my tastes.  but i never stated my opinion as fact -- i just feel it could have been done better.

Well, there is a difference between disliking the style they've selected and failing to acknowledge their technical achievements.  GTAIV is doing quite a bit (much more than something like Crackdown) with the hardware.

I hope you can un-blur the edge of the draw distance in the PC version.  That bothers me the most out of all of GTA's graphical foibles. It seems like they went with a more cinematic view with blurred areas that aren't the focal point of the view, but I don't think it works well with the game...needs as full of view as possible.

I'm tempted to check out the PC version of San Andreas to see how much better it looks over the console versions...

Ass Creed and Crackdown do look amazing imho, but then again those worlds are void of any actual content. Also Ass Creed sucks ass. Crackdown is the legit shit though.

GTA IV licks Crackdown's ass at this point. It's sort of like how it was with Assassin's Creed; all that ambition, yet fails to be a good game. GTA IV has so much to it, but it plays and looks like crap. Crackdown was a limited experience, but a smooth running one. Oh well, may Sucker Punch and Radical deliver us from this crap.

PSP doesnt do 640x480 cause it's 16:9 Eli.

Are youre going to be GTA4's AltogetherAndrews?  :'(

It's not my fault that GTA IV licks shitcrusted nard. At least AC got some well deserved crap flung at it from various monkeys of various gaming rags, whereas this garbage seems to go not only unpunished, but actually celebrated as a relatively flawless masterpiece. This shitty game? Right.
