He's the President - he doesn't have to be scared of anything, especially this so-called "new" government (and really, is a Democrat controlled House and possibly Senate going to alter our lives for the better so drastically?).  He's just trying not to look like an asshole by gridlocking, and reaching out.

Wishful thinking.  History will not be kind to this administration.

True, but he's not going to literally go on trial.
Oh, I know.  I misread and my comment was meant for Rumsfeld.

Don't forget. The Democrat senate gets to approve of the new Sec' of Defense. If the new guy is "stay the course" he ain't getting approved.

Textbooks and impeachment are two very different things.

You're not a dumb man.  You think the Democrats are going to undo all the wrongs of the administration with this newfound sense of solidarity?  I give this "new" government two months before infighting and shenanigans begin.

Let's not forget, it wasn't just Republicans that weren't showing up to work and spending most of their constinuents' time fundraising.

Bush is a lot of things, but he isn't stupid.  Why in the hell would he ask Rummy to resign so he could just appoint the same type of personnel?  He's obviously trying to not get cockblocked out of Congress.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, is stepping down as Secretary of Defense, President Bush announced today. Bush said he is nominating Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, to replace Rumsfeld.
So this has been in the works for a little while now...of course they wouldn't announce it before the election.

Bush *is* stupid. He's demonstrated his deliberate ignorance and willful stupidity time and time again. He has some savvy playmakers in his corner, that's all.

No, Bush isn't stupid, but he is stubborn.  He's carefully orchestrated events to go according to his plan, but he's never accounted for being wrong.

Everyone who has met him knows he's pretty smart.  Rove is obviously the diabolical genius, but Bush is no slouch either.  He knows how to play the game and up until he ran out of chips, he was playing everybody.

Press conference just ended. Overall I thought it was a good, candid discussion. Bush didn't hold back in describing what happened yesterday, going so far as to call it a "thumping". He placed blame upon himself a few times, and he also acknoledged issues such as the corruption seen in Republican politics recently.

His reach out for bipartisanship was rather clear, although to be frank he had no choice; in many ways, the Democrats are running things now. It's clear that he's going to stick to his guns on some core issues, but he made is clear that he was willing to work with Democrats on other issues such as immigration; a Democratic house actually gives him a better chance of getting his immigration ideas through than a Republican one.

He seemed a bit cagey at times, but he also was quite the jokester, going so far as to playfully slam Karl Rove to his face; I admit, I busted out laughing there.

But in the end it comes down to results. Bush gave a very optimistic State of the Union address at the beginning of this year and then failed to live up to any of his promises. It's going to be interesting to see how long Bush is willing to play nice with the Democrats. He's obviously used to getting his way, but when Pelosi and her gang of experienced committee leaders start turning up the heat Bush is in for a suprise.

I think he's saying you said "don't get your hopes up" about the elections last week, and were proven wrong.

In this case, there's absolutely no way a foreign court is going to do anything to Rumsfied. Not going to happen.

Did I say that?  I don't think I anticipated anything different than the common wisdom, which was more-or-less what happened.
