When it comes to fun factor I've always enjoyed how the Elder Scrolls series has handled stealth.  MGS is total crap regarding stealth.  I play MGS in Rambo-style.  There's nothing fun about moving around in prone position.

And fuck you, Thief was amazing.

The Thief games and Splinter Cell do a good job of getting stealth right, IMO. The most important thing is really providing the proper feedback to the player so that when they get caught, they have a clear understanding why it happened. That's why stuff like Thief's light gem and stellar audio are so important-each provided instant feedback to the player.

I'd also say that level design is also really important, and that in these games it is FAR better to make less enemies with environmental puzzles that allow the player to exploit stealth mechanics than it make huge areas with densely populated enemies, which totally suck since the game moves SO slow as you slog through a small army of baddies.

Stealth as an add-on to most games is terrible. Without familiar game rules, user feedback ,and AI  behaviors, stealth can get maddeningly frustrating.

also stealth sections in RPGs are NOT a new trend.  Breath of Fire I had one and I think even FF2 on NES did.

I think this applies to motion controls too.

All stealth games suck EXCEPT Thief, which does it right.  And MGS is much about stealth as Clay Akien is to heterosexuality.

Thief is RIDICULOUSLY awesome (all of them) and I quite like Deus Ex.  The rest I don't really care for.

Although I definitely like being a thieving, sneaky bastard whenever given the choice (like in Elder Scrolls).

:lol I must be the only person alive who likes the OOT courtyard, Beyond Good & Evil's stealth sections, and the short stealth sections in some JRPG dungeons.  But I prefer small doses.  Entire games filled with that (MGS) don't really do it for me.

But Thief is in another class.  Sitting in the shadows, watching movements, and waiting for an opportunity is great fun for me.  I never tire of it.

I didn't love OoT's courtyard for sure, but you could finish that in like 2-3 minutes, as opposed to some of the more annoying stuff that other games had.

Deus Ex was fucking awesome. Thief ruled but it's too hardcore for me. And I like Splinter Cell too.

MGS isn't a stealth game, it's an exercise in learning guard patrols.

It started with Ocarina Of Time and running through the fucking courtyard. It's how Nfags got their MGS fix back then.

Oh yeah FF7 had stealth shit too.

I threw Deus Ex in there because I really wanted to play the game, but I couldn't get past the initial stealth training section. Tried (and failed) five times before I gave up (then uninstalled the game and shat on the CDROM install disk).

Thief is indeed stealth done right. I've seen others play and I can appreciate what the game has achieved.

But I suck at stealth games as much as most stealth games suck.

The first level where you scale the tower? It's probably one of the weaker levels, but there's still a number of ways to go about it. Some of the later levels are brilliant.

That's only a stealth level if you make it a stealth level. Hell, you are even given a freaking GEP gun if you prefer using that to a sniper rifle or crossbow with tranq darts. It's the excellence of Deus Ex. I've played through the game like 20 times, and I've never considered it a stealth game, simply because I've never actually chosen the stealth method.

I think you're (the character) too weak to just run and gun that level though. And it's poor for a first level because it's only vertical. The later levels are flatter with more paths.

The stealth section in Crisis Core was HORRIBLE.

QFT.  See also: Wind Waker, any other game where stealth is not the primary game mechanic but they shoehorned it in anyway.

That said, I generally enjoy a game with a well-done, focused stealth gameplay mechanic.  Splinter Cell, MGS, Thief... all were at least good.  Some were great.  It mostly depends on how polished the mechanic is.

Also, MGS3's top difficulty where you get game over if you get spotted is fucking hardcore.  I can't beat it, but man, I love it! :P
